Hi out there. Are Big Chrysler outboards worth messing with or not. I know they are no longer made but I see alot of 70 horsepower one around. Thanks!

Don't think I buy one but have nothing to base my prejudice on other than it just makes sense to own a big name engine. Parts, service, reliability ect.

I think it boils down to more time on the water, less headaches...

My 2 cents. :)

Chrysler motors are good moorings. Don't waste a dime on one.

The first boat I owned had a Chrysler motor on it. If you don't mind working on it every time you put your boat in the water they are not bad motors. Take lots of tools with you when you go out because you may have to work on it some more once you have left the ramp and are 20 miles or so from home.

Actually you couldn't give me a Chrysler or a Force (same as a Chrysler) motor. They are not good motors.

You guys are tough...I had a 1977 45hp Chrysler that I sold about 5 years ago. Trusted it enough to let my wife take the boat out alone and with her friends. For the 5 or so years I had it I had zero problems. Also still have a 1979 Chrysler 9.9 my family purchased new. Always in the salt,
used very sparingly and with little love. Has always worked well. That being said, I wouldn't invest a large sum of money in a Chrysler, resale isn't much. They're old technology motors, easy to work on and not much to go wrong.

Dad had a Chrysler 50 for a while when I was a young-un.

We were usually better off if we could not get it started at the dock because that meant we wouldn't have to get a tow back in.

I believe that motor became part of the "artificial reef" that grew in front of our camp.

Even if a guy wants to give you one, he's "NOT
doing you a favor believe me.
The government should have shut them down the first year they made em, but it didn't happen & many people got fooled & bought them.
Their not even worth the money they give you for scrap metal even if it's brand new.
Absolutly pure 100% junk.

Well... Do you remember the K-Class cars from Chrysler in the 80's, like the Reliant K? Well if you do, their reliability and durability are about the same as their outboards...

Chrysler motors are simple, they are easy to work on and breakdowns are not uncommon. Chrysler technology, up untill Mercury updated the ignition system and lower unit, was Fred Flintstone era. But they worked, not as well as a Merc or J/E, but they worked.

Over the years I have sold hundreds of them under the Sea King brand and the same again as Force. Sure there were some problems and more than Merc or J/E but what a price difference. Most problems were ignition related, over a period of 22 years I never saw a Chrysler/Sea King/Force with a blown powerhead or lower unit gear problems.

I don't think they deserve the bad rap that they get.

Here in the Hudson Valley, the 70hp seems plentiful and everyone's about giving them away.

That's one thing about a Chrysler, you can't blow the powerhead if it's not running . . .

RMS, there are times when I too thought my wife should take the boat out with a Chrysler motor on it. I thought I could pull off the Johnson, put on the Chrysler and then tell her to take the boat out a very long way. See, there may be a good use for Chrysler outboards!
