Looking for a 30 to 40hp motor for my 1962 13'. I need some assistance on choosing the right motor for this application. I know the older 13's have a 15 inch transom which limits your choices. Anybody who can provide any input would be appreciated.

With the older hulls I like a 30hp engine. Easier to find in 15" shaft and usually less weight. The boat was designed when a 40 was comparable to our 30 now. Putting a 40 would be equiv to an old 50. Not a problem but remember the hull is almost 42 uears old.....don't stress it too much if ya know what I mean. 40 will not be much if any faster but will handle weight better. |

Good point! Never really thought too much about old technology versus new technology. Also a good point about finding a short shaft 30hp versus a 40hp short shaft. Thanks for the input I appreciate it. |

Last month I followed the advice of Bigshot and a few others in the forum and re-powered my 1966 13’ Sport with a 30 hp 4-stroke. I received a good price on a Nissan with tilt and trim and have been happy with it so far.The motor is very quiet when trolling around in the backwaters and has enough power for our needs. I don’t know our top-end speed yet, but we get on plane very quickly with my family aboard and a cooler – about 500 lbs. My guess is we’re probably able to hit a bit less than 30 mph which is plenty fast for my wife and kids. We also got the Whaler on plane this week with 4 adults, 2 kids, a Golden Retriever, and a cooler – about 900 lbs. That was really pushing it! It took a while to get it up, but we scooted right along once it planed out. We purchased a 15” shaft and the motor weighs about 150 lbs. I think you will find that your choice of brands for a 15" shaft in the 30/40 hp range with remote and tilt & trim to be pretty limited. Good luck with your decision. John

For personal reasons that led me to bypass most of the posted advice and my own research (which told me to buy a Nissan 30 hp) I re-powered my 1970 13' sport with a Mercury 25 hp Bigfoot in May. 15" shaft remote / electric model is only available WITHHOUT power trim - and is still appreciably heavier than the Nissan. It weighs in near the generic "lightest model" listing of 178 lbs, since aside from the electric start, it is the lightest 25 HP Bigfoot model. Ah, what the heck - I get to experience the joys of my youth and change the tilt pin while manually pulling up the motor all of the time. I did get the engine for a real good price, and if this Mercury really does live up to the expectations Mercury critics, at least I bought in time to get 5 years of warranty coverage. It is plenty fast for my intended uses; my wife took one ride and decided it was too fast for her and the two-year old unless the water is completely flat. With a 13" pitch aluminum prop I have gotten as high as 30/31 MPH on the GPS with myself and two of my kids (275 lbs; @ 5920 rpm). Loaded down a bit with three kids and two adults (525 lbs; @5750 rpm) - 24 to 26 MPH. |

Ken, its not what's hanging on the transom, but the knuckle head hanging on to the tiller or throttle that deprives wives and children of more boating pleasure. My wive solved her knuckle head problem by buying her own Montauk. When we go in her boat it's at her speed, course and no breaking inlets.

I'm pretty sure the Nissan/Tohatsu 40 hp is the only 2-stroke 40 available with 15" shaft and tilt and trim. It's offered in the TLDI (direct injection) version as well. I think the 40 hp TLDI would be the ultimate pre '73 13 motor. Both are 3 cylinder motors and should offer plenty of holeshot and load carrying power. After owning a '72 13 sport with a 40 hp Mercury for over 10 years, I think I would be unhappy with less power than the 40. |

What are your options of manufacturers for a 40hp with 15" shaft, electric start, tilt and trim? Also does anyone make a motor bracket that accepts a 20" with out shimming the bracket and performing magic during the installation? It seems that someone over in the Florida area would make one because of the demand to repower old Whalers. Allen |
