I have a new-to-me 2003 Yamaha 70 on the transom of my 15 SuperSport. The Yamaha 703 side mount control has four colored wires and bullet style connectors hanging from it. I suspect these may be outputs for a Yamaha tachometer but I am not exactly sure. Does anyone know what these connectors are for?

Peter, What color are the wires. I think they are for the tilt/trim. Mike |

Gep you might be right. The tach hookup should be in the wiring harness I believe. |

I was wondering if those wires could be for a remote trim switch but since the control has a trim switch, that seems a bit redundant to me unless they are there for dual installation purposes or something. The reason I thought that they might be for the tachometer is that I believe that the OMC side mount control had a connector that you could plug an OMC tachometer into and Yamaha seemed to be copying OMC for a while. I believe that the colors are black, yellow, green and red. The red wire seems to be treated separately from the other three wires on the dummy plug.

Most tachs only have 1 wire & it connects to the wire coming from the rectifier, most are gray. Sal |

Thanks for the replys. Doing some further research, Jokor is right. For all those who may have a similar question in the future, here is what I have found out about the wires: Black is ground Yello is IGN (Switched 12Vdc) Green is Tach signal Red is 12V dc (hot all the time) This is independently confirmed by Teleflex's installation instructions for tachometers viewable at Teleflex's web site. Looks like it should be easy to hook up the tachometer. |

The black & red are only used for the light bulb on the tach, they don't connect to any thing else. The tach wire on the Yamaha is green i believe, omc is gray. Be sure you set the correct number in back of the tach to match Yamaha. Omc is # 6. I really don't know how well teleflex tachs work on Yamahas, but I have had more then a few teleflex tachs [ set on the correct number ] really make me nuts when connecting to an Omc, just wouldn't read right, & had to install Omc tachs. The selector switch on the back of the tach needs to be set to reflect the number of poles in the alternator. I believe all newer mid size and larger Yamahas have a 12 pole alternator. The Teleflex instructions tell you how to set the switch if you know the number of poles.Does anyone know if I'm right about the 12 pole number? For what its worth, if you use the red and black wires for the tach light, it will always be on. You might want to use the nav light positive for the "red" terminal of the tach light instead. Green to black is the path for the tach signal. Some positive to the same black is the path for the light. |

If i'm not mistaken, teleflex tachs only come with the highest number being 2-6 on the back. Omc engines are number 6, but teleflex tachs don't always understand that. I don't recall ever seeing a number 12 on the dial. Sal |

Jokor, Teleflex instructs to set the switch to 3P for 6 poles on 25-70hp 3cylinder engines and 6P for 12 poles on 75hp and up. Has Yamaha made a change from a 6 pole to a 12 pole alternator on the 2003 70 hp? What kind of propeller are you spinning? |
