I promptly lost the instructions that came with a new kill switch (with tether) and need some help. What color wire(s) from the ignition switch do I tap into, and is the switch supposed to break the circuit, make the cicuit, or ground out in order to kill the engine. This in on a Montauk with 2003 Mercury classic, 90 hp.

Newt, Looking at the wiring diagram for the lanyard this would be black/yellow at the ignition. B... |

Also, according to these instructions, the purple wire at the stop switch is not used on the outboard. The black/white at the stop switch goes to the ground (black) at the tach. This confused me a minute as a mercruiser uses the purple and not the black/yellow. I had a mercruiser before so it's odd. B... |

Let me see if I understand this correctly. I wire the black/yellow to one side of the kill switch, and the tack ground to the other. When the lanyard is pulled, the switch will close and ground out the black/yellow.Does that sound right? |

The kill switch I bought is simply a toggle switch with a clever housing around the toggle that causes the switch to throw when the lanyard is pulled. It can be set up to either close when thrown or open when thrown. I am going to go ahead and wire so the when the lanyard is pulled, the switch closes and grounds out the black/yellow. Thanks for the help. |

Not sure about Mercury, but my OMC wiring diagram shows the black/yellow wire (comes from the power pack) going to ground after the kill switch. The switch should be in the open position to run. Again, that's OMC but it sounds like they might use the same color code. |

I have a friend with the same problem concerning a kill switch on his 60hp Mercury outboard. Are you telling me that the purple wire is not used, Which wire comes from the key switch if any? The engine cranks but gets spark intermitently. Any idea on what to check. Thanks! |
