We are considering purchasing a 1995 Rage with a 115 HP Jet Drive and have heard good and bad things about them. Now, we are really confussed and would like some advise. Please help.

Hi and welcome to the forum, you won't find many kind words around here for the Rage's.I am one of the guys who converted mine over to a jet drive and LOVE IT!!! You just try and find a 1995 Dauntless(basically the same hull as a rage) with a 75 hp O/B for what i have in mine.I say if the price is cheap enough and you would consider doing the swap yourself down the road,go for it.If your looking at the 115 hp version,it is prone to overheating and is not a powerhouse, but does have the power house fuel consumption. The handeling of the boats is like running in your socks on a freshly waxed floor, but once converted over to a O/B,it's just as good as any other whaler.

Unlike most Whalers, these when filled with water will submerge the engine and POOF! I think Whaler made a mistake in building them.

Having run many jet powered river boats, both outboard and inboard, in Alaska I am a firm believer in them. They perform great on the rivers and well on lakes and salt water. I have also ran many of the glass go fast boats with a jet drive.

With a jet drive you will have to learn a new type of boat handling, no big deal.

The only way you will ever be happy with a jet boat is if it is maxed out in HP. A 115 in a Rage jet is realy about 85 HP, get out the oars.

To be honest,i doubt it's even that, more like 50-60 hp.my 75 hp O/B is about 5-8 mph faster than the old jet drive.I'm not 100% sure its 75 hp at the prop either.

I love my '95/15'/115hp Rage. Like they say, 'whatever floats your boat'.

I think Bob meant he converted his boat from a jet to an outboard.

Query, Should you stay away from jet drives?

I think one of the attributes of a jet drive is that you can get within close proximity to it without fear of injury. Do not try this with a propeller drive. :-)

Sorry I couldn't resist.
