Greetings. I need to replace the tired old rotten wooden
helm seat with something my girlfriend won't complain con-tinually about. Is there enough wood within the hull at that point to allow installation of 2 pedestal seats or maybe a combination seat/cooler as seen in West Marine? And
i wonder how I would know if the wood is solid enough for mounting the above other than falling off onto my can, that is. Thx!

Probably not enough wood for pedestal seats as the stringers in the deck of your boat are only 1/2" ply, 4" wide. See the 16' wood location drawing note "B" on this site:

Your'e going to have to find a seat with fastening points very close to 32" apart. There is not a lot of room for "fudging".

Thx Bill. I wonder if I could inject some type of resin through the mounting holes for pedestal seats as long as they are not too large....some resin like the West System or similar. But maybe it would eat away at the inner foam.

I think that if you went that route the eventual result would be a catastrophic failure of the deck depositing your can somewhere in the stern of the boat. Just too much leverage for a resin plug.
If you are really wedded to the pedestal idea I would think about bridging the stringers with something substantial (Aluminum plate?) and fastening the bases to that.
I think the best thing would be to rebuild the Nauset seat and have some nice cushions made for it.
What is the girlfriend's complaint anyway ??

Thx again Bill. Fortunately, my girlfriend's bum is not as large as mine so she suffers from insufficient cushioning so to speak on the old wooden bench. But that old bench sure looks salty and I like that. It would be a shame to toss the design...

Dood, put a pad on it :) I am going to have them made for my Currituck bench seats, when I order the 17` Standard interior for her, the varnishing of wood thing, just wasn`t me anymore. Jack.

Wayneman. I'm currently restoring a 69 Nauset that had been retrofitted with pedestal seating... just screwed to the floow. I'm told by seller that seats had been in since 1985 with no trauma to boat or butts. Fortunately he also saved the original helm seat as I'm returning the boat to original state.
I have thought of doing what Bill suggests, welding the pedestal flanges to an aluminum plate and screwing that into the original holes for the wooden seat. That would allow me (or next owner) the option of the classic wooden seat, or comfortable swivel seating of pedestals...

That is all excellent information guys. I like the idea of putting the seat s ona plate but not disturbing the hull anymore. And my original seat needs to be rebuilt anyhow. Thx for the info!
