What should the approximate cost be to put a finish of gelcoat on the exterior hull of a Montauk? (from the rubrail down) The previous owner had work done on the hull to fill the dings and hicks, but didn't have the finish coat done. It appears to me that there is still some work to be done to smooth out some areas, but it should be minor unless the glass shop finds some areas that weren't done properly. I've got quotes from $2100 to $3000. This is minor hull work, prep, spray(30-40mils thick)and all finish sanding and buffing.

That seems a little high, unless there is a lot of work your having done, I had a much larger whaler redone, inside and out and it came in around $3k, keep shopping around. Who knows maybe where you live glasswork is more expensive, but I would keep trying. Martin

If they are going to re-gelcoat the whole exterior in the $2,000 range might not be bad. I had a friend who just completely re-gelcoated a 1968 Nauset and he spent about $5,400.00. After speaking with the point man at a local whaler dealer I decided at his suggestion to paint rather than re-gelcoat my boat. He has worked on and owned whalers for over 25 years and his suggestion was a good one. The exterior of the boat is complete and it looks great. It saved me quite a bit of money.

If the repairs were just a few dings and nicks, perhaps you don't have to gel coat the entire boat. A hand sanding with w/d following by a buffing can really bring out old gel if its solid. Refill the dings and nicks with a matching patch paste, or spray only the repaired areas. If you have time, such spot repair to gelcoat can be DIY.

umm, is w/d = "Wet/dry" ??
I'm interested cause my 1968 13' sport still has a very nice undamaged blue interior that looks like it would clean up & still be real shiny.
