Anyone out there use a bow cushion on their Montauk? If so, what are your likes/dislikes? I assume this is available for a '98 Montauk. Any advice about the cost and where to purchase? Any issues with installation? Is a stern seat a worthwhile purchase? If so, where would I find one of these animals?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think I need a little more seating/comfortable riding area in my boat.

Thanks,
KDW

I don't have the stern seat, but I do have a bow cushion. I just had all the seats and console rod rack pads redone, along with sumbrells covers for the console and helm seat. Decided to get the bow cushion more for the wife and kids then for me. Turned out great and was an additional $260.00. The canvas guy I used in the Atlanta area did a great job and made it look original with off-white ribbed vinal and the brown piping. Here is what he made:

New vinal cushion &Sumbrella cover for Helm / Pilot seat.
New matching cooler cushion and backrest pads for front cooler seat.
Sumbrella cover for console that also extends forward to cover cooler seat.
New bow cushion. Everything made and installed was $880.00. I am glad I had bow cushion made but it is a little harder to keep clean since it is the only thing not covered when not in use. I still need a cover for winter but have plenty of use left since our season is extended here in the south.

I have the stern seat in my 99, and think it is a nice addition. My wife loves it as she can stretch out and read while I fish.
Installation is simple and the seat is easy to remove. It is a little spendy, it listed for around $1,200.00 in 99 when I put my boat together. The Boston Whaler part number is 100-70332.
There is a picture of my installation at:

Thanks JMorgan40 and Dick!

JMorgan 40,

I live in Anderson,SC so I'm not too far from Atlanta. Actually, I bought my '98 Whaler from Boating Atlanta in Buford. If you don't mind, could you tell me who did your upholstery work? Sounds like you got a good deal.

Dick,

Very nice set up. What's involved in removing the stern seat? Can Can the motor cowling hit the seat if tilted too much?

Thanks for your help.

When mounting the seat tilt the motor all of the way up and position the seat, with the mounting brackets attached, so the back just clears the motor and mark the deck at the end of each mounting bracket.
The two 1/4" thick aluminum plates are then attached to the deck running fore and aft, the seat sets on these and is held down with four heavy duty 1/4X20 wing nuts.

I enjoyed viewing the shots of your Montauk and it looks real neat.

Tell me how you mounted your trolling motor, where the wiring is,and where the battery is located.

I am to start on one on my Montauk tomorrow. Thanks,

Gerald

Kenny,
I have both the bow cushion and the stern seat. We have two small kids and many nieces and nephews. The stern seat is a great option. The bow cushion is nice but, and I know that some don't agree, I don't let anyone ride on the bow cushion when were moving above no wake speed. Maybe I'm nuts but if the boat stops suddenly, anyone on that cushion could easily slide under the rail and over the bow. I'm not nuts about the cooler seat for children either. But at least theres a grab bar centered over the cooler. One other advantage of the bow cushion is that it keeps the bow hatch from flopping around.

I don't leave the bow cushion on the boat because it traps water against the bow hatch. My hatch is mahogany so it tends to swell if the bow cushion is left on after it rains.

The motor is mounted using motorguides removable mount. Two round plates are attached to the step pad on the bow. Easy to do but it takes a bit of time to shim the plates level.

The group 27 deep cycle battery is mounted in the anchor locker the power wire for the motor enters the locker through the anchor line notch. No on board charging, but that hasn't been a problem for me.

I'll e-mail you a picture of the mounting plates.
