Just purchased a '74 Outrage 22.

I want to be able to launch this baby off a pier using a hoist. To do this, I will have a custom coast-gaurd certified "sling" made (which is basically three or four thick nylon straps that come together at a metal ring which attaches to the hook of the hoist). The sling needs solid boat mounts to attach to. These mounts will bare the entire weight of the boat and contents (3000 - 4000lbs)

My old 13' whaler had three stock thru-hull eye bolts that I used to attach the sling to. Two eyebolts were on the transom and one on the bow.

Has anyone out there setup a sling on a 22ft-er? Any suggestion or references as to who could help me out?

Thank you.

Cary - In fact, Whaler has a recommended setup for sling eyes on this year / model. If I can get my scanner to work, I'll scan in the drawings and email them to you. I have a 1974 21' Outrage with the sling eyes installed.

Al, I would also be very interested in seeing your drawing. I have a 1979 20' outrage. The previous owner connected a sling to the three stock eye-bolts. However our local pier has some concerns about the stock bolts since they are not backed up by stainless on the transom. Also they prefer galvonized eye-bolts to stainless for strength. -mag

Bad news guys - The scanner went belly up and I am headed out of town for the week on Monday. It will be a week before I'm back in the office to use the scanner. I will upload the drawing at that time.

I will try to impart the intelligence contained in the drawing if I can.

The BW drawing number is 15023801, two pages, dated 10/24/75 drawn by JVY, approved by RSP.

For the stern eyes -
Parts list: (no part numbers on my copy of the drawing)
2 ea Eyes, Lifting
2 ea Plates, backup
2 ea Washers, lock
2 ea Nuts

The eye is installed in the flat area between the sponson and the motor well. The center of the hole for the eye is 1.5" in from the inside edge of the sponson, and 1.25" forward from the inside edge of the rub rail. The eye needs to be parallel to the centerline of the boat. The section view of the stern eye show an eye that resembles the bow eye that Whaler installed up forward. It also indicates that the backing plate needs have a radius ground onto it to accommodate radius on the underside.

For the bow eyes -
Parts List:
12-1046 - 2 ea - eyes, lifting
12-1065 - 4 ea - bolts, carriage
12-908 - 4 ea - nuts
12-909 - 12 ea - washers
23-69 - 2 ea - Loc-Tite

Center the eye 31" from the sampson post, measured along the rubrail. The lifting eye should touch the edge of the rub rail. To avoid sharp threads, use washers as required to allow the nut to flush fit the top of the carriage bolt.

On my boat, all lifting eyes are, half inch, stainless 'U' bolts, instead of single shaft bolts. The backing plates are oval shaped.

I know this is a bit thin but might give you some idea of the area to look at.
