Author Topic:   Deck Repair on OUTRAGE-18

All,
I had the wood replaced on the underside of the [remoceable cockpit deck insert] of my [1986 OUTRAGE-18] and just got the [piece] back. The repairs look good, I am pleased with the aesthetics. However, it looks as if the repairer used 5/8" on top of the 1/4" plywood (I think it was originally 1/2" over 1/4"). I thought that we had come to this understanding when the floor was dropped off for the repair. Anyway, before I raise a big stink over this, does anyone have any ideas about this being a problem? While trying to get some measurements, it looks like it will fit (albeit tight). All of the raised areas have a deck plate so those won't be a problem, that is, not interfere with the fuel guage and hose connections). Any thoughts?

Thanks
Ray

My concern would be the weight and the original wood left in place which might be rotting.

[Changed "18OR" to OUTRAGE-18; changed "floor" to deck--jimh.]

The original wood was removed down to the 1/4" piece, which appeared to be in good shape. I am most concerned about the fit.

All,
I haven't recieved much in the way of comments, so I wanted to ask another question. When the deck of an 86 18OR is laying in its place *unscrewed* from hull, does the deck sit up higher than the surrounding hull, or are they level?

Thanks
Ray

rayl,

My floor is the same level as the surrounding area....

I always thought the plywood piece underneath was 3/4" and was one long sheet.... I have never had mine up so I can't say for sure...

Let us know what the outcome is...

I actually did this repair work with a friend. We found two plywood sheets laminated together. We were able to remove all wood down to the deck covering itself ( paper thin). I assume the new wood has been re fibreglasseed over?. The lips where the screws go in probably have not been modified- if that is correct it should simply screw down into place and be level as before. You may have problem with the tubes and metal attachments for the tubes from the gas tank underneath and may need to grind out areas where this may not fit. However, we didn’t have this problem- I think I used 1/2 plywood ( marine grade) and about three layers of fiberglass ! I have some photos of the wood coming off etc…

My '82 Outrage deck appears to be fairly level with the sides. I have not taken it up as there is only one small soft spot that flexes a bit between the 2 front access hatches. I'll probably just reinforce this spot from the hatch openings. Brian
