I need advice on repairing the teak on my 1990 outrage 22. My boat has a super leaning post with a teak cover that needs sanding and stained however the rest of the wood on the boat is in good shape. Do I still need to sand down the other wood . Confused------------Joe

Remove all the wood, except the gunwales of course. Clean it well with straight acetone or an acetone-based varnish remover. Acetone, some bronze wool and several toothbrushes will remove even the worst gunked up oil and/or varnish deposits. The bad piece of teak, after stripping with acetone you might sand with 100, 120 and 150 grit paper. Then sand everything with 180 grit, no higher. Now you are ready to finish either with oil or varnish. If the gunwales need more than normal teak cleaner and brightener, you can buy a gellcoat-safe varnish remover. I'd still mask off and drape your glass around the gunwales and nearby decking. Just keep the acetone-based removers away from your gellcoat. Good luck.

There is much to be searched out on teak refinishing, either oiling or varnishing.
