Anyone ever had an older OMC V8 Outboard? I found an old Chris Craft center console at auction with a 275 Johnson. Were these worth anything or total junkers? I wouldn't be keeping just need it to run long enough to sell it!! (My wife says one more boat and she's gone.)

The 4L blocks were supposably good, the older 3.6L were not. I still see them around but resale is not great.

In the late 80s & early 90s they made a 275 hp & 300 hp V8.
They weren't very popular because they were huge & needed a fire hose for a fuel line.
I got to test drive a 30' commercial Outrage with 3 300s on it for the navy.
They needed a fire boat that could get from Port Chicago in west Pittsburg to Hunters Point in San Francisco in less that 40 minutes.
I ran those big gas hogs between 60 & 70 mph & made it in 33 minutes in 3,4, & 5 ft waves, head on, man what a boat for tuna, only thing was, the hull alone was $100,000 in 1990.
The techs who rigged the boat were just mechanics & had no experience at all in high speed driving & got permission for me to test run her for 100 miles & I found she was under propped.
If i'm not mistaken I think she was swinging 15 x 23 omc s/s props & needed 15 x 25s.
She was comparativly light because all she had for weight was a fairly light high preasure pump mounted right in front of the counsel & 200 gallons of fuel for 900 hp.
Those engines were dogs but I totally fell in love with that rig.

They weigh a ton and drink even more gas. Very few buyers for the motor.

Sal, do you remember if the standard transom thickness was enough for 3 300 hp outboards? I stood next to one of those things at the Outboard Motor Shop in Alameda. You can fit an adult inside one!

Never scared

NC, I had never seen a 30' Outrage & it was built for the navy, extra commercial.
I do remember the transom was about 5 or 6" thick.
Never saw the boat again or another like it.

I heard a while back that OMC was still making these V-8 outboards for the overseas market. Not enough market for them in the US. The 1985 Johnson Catalog showed an Outrage 25 with a single 275 on it. I always thought that it was a sweet looking rig.

I think the V-8 OMC never put out what it was advertized to be, as it started out at 300HP then ended up as 250, as smaller Merc 225's were consistently running away from it. When Mercury brought out their big 3.4 liter V-6 to compete with it, at 275 HP, they advertized this V-6 would outrun the OMC V-8. And that was not a great engine either. Then when Mercury brought out the current 225 HP 3.0 liter V-6 in 1993, they advertized that this new engine would outperform both the V-8 and their prior 3.4 V-6. Now we know that this engine will indeed put out up to 300HP. So that ended it for the inefficient 250HP V-8, with the 225 OceanPro then becoming their top of the line engine.

Is Bombardier even furnishing parts for this engine? I would stay away from it, as I think they are white elephants.

I just rebuilt a pair of O.M.C. V-8 250`s. Just as easy as a v-6 just two more cylinders. These loopers are mounted on a 33ft offshore center console boat that had a history of drug running but was confiscated and sold at auction, cheap. These carbureted monsters will out-perform any conventional EFI or DFI outboard. The fuel consumption is a different story. We predict approx 98 gallons per hour, each. The rig boasts two 200 gallon tanks. Everything on this boat is big and it is on a triple axle trailer. I am trying to talk the owner into naming the boat "Size Matters"....Allthough if he pulls up to a 40 footer there may be a problem....

Steve, theres no way those engine can burn 98 gallons each per hour.
I doubt you can get 98 gallons of fuel through a 3/8" fuel line in an hour.
I'd say close to 30 / 35 gph each at wot.
I ran those 3 monsters [ 300s ]very near wot with only 200 gallons of fuel on board for over an hour [ 33 minutes one way & 29 minutes back ] with only 200 gallons of fuel on board & still had over 1/3 left after horsing around for another hour.

Trent Morrow will be happy to hear that news. He was going to have to take out a small loan to take the boat on its trial run. Jerry at the Outboard Motor Shop in Alameda, Ca projected the 98 gals / hr. Thanks Sal.
