The port running light on my 1987 18 foot Outrage went out, althought the starboard light was working. In disassembling the housing, it appears the light bulb is part of the base. I could not get it apart without breaking the bulb, which I did not want to do. Am I wrong, or should I use whatever force is necessary to remove the bulb? I assume that all parts are original, in that I bought the boat in 1996.

In my refit of a 1986 Outrage-18, I faced your problem. I determined that both lead wires into the lights were still "hot". Both metal housings were, of course, sound, but the plastic fittings inside the housings were in pretty bad shape from some past impact. Moreover, both bulbs had corroded into the receivers. Answer was to carefully break the bulb and receivers out of the plastic fittings and replace with new receivers and bulbs. From West Marine or Boaters World, you can purchase just a bare light fitting to match the existing ones, with new leads attached. I used JB-Weld to cement everything back in place, and they've worked great ever since. For annual maintenance, I remove and swab the metal base of all my lightbulbs with a thin coat of Vaseline to keep corrosion in check. Good luck. |
