My gearcase is leaking on my Evinrude 15 (circa 1980), evidenced by milky oil. How difficult is it to replace the seals yourself? I have a Clymer shop manual and am fairly mechanically inclined. I'm afraid that a mechanic will charge me more than the engine is worth to do the work. The maunal calls for several specialized tools to perform the work (pullers and installers). Are these readilly available on the industrial tool market, or will I have to buy these from OMC/Bombardier? Any help or experience on this matter is appreciated.

Tim Tub,I usually like to work on things myself but I didn't think buying the special tools was worth it for me.. I owned my 1985 70hp Evinrude since new and last year my lower unit started leaking... This is the only thing that has ever happened to this engine... Anyway, I took it in to the dealer and had all the seals, "O" rings, and whatever else, replaced in the lower unit... $100.00.... and that included new fluid and warranty.... I don't know how much the special tools are, but I didn't plan on doing this again for another 18 years either... Also, if you don't get it right, it will leak again... I think it is probably more trouble purchasing the tools and doing it yourself then it is worth in the long run... Sure, if it didn't take the special tools it might be worth it giving it a try.... Look at KEND below, The tech on my 1988 90 Johnson charged $317.50. That encluded replacing all seals, the Impeler, and winterizing. The labor cost was $210.00,the balance parts and tax.I belive the seal kit was $57.95 and the impeller kit $35.95. |

pressure test it and see what seal is leaking. On a 15 it might be real easy to do the outer seal because I think you remove 2 bolts and it comes apart. The other seal prone to leaking is the shift or driveshaft seal and they are easy to replace as well. |

A word of caution on Pressure Testing....My Evinrude mechanic did a Pressure Test and there were no leaks from the test... It seems the Pressure sealed the leaks for my particular situation.. He told me that there was nothing wrong... Well then, why was there clean yellow oil dripping from my lower unit into the lower prop shaft area while sitting in the garage??? It was not dirty exhaust oil, it was clear yellow, smelled like oil too... It was leaking just from sitting... I had him do the complete lower unit seals, not the impeller, or winterize etc.. Took it home and No Leaks..... Looks like a got a good deal too according to the other reports on another thread... It took the mechanic about an hour plus the kit... $100.00.... |
