Has anyone Awlgripped a 17' Montauk? I have one stripped down and sanded and was wondering how the Awlgrip holds up, especially on the non skid.

thanks,
Jeff

So far holding up well on my 1972 16 Montauk. I redid the entire blue interior in my boat with Imron now going on two years and it is still perfect. Imron is a comptetive product to Awlgrip, but basically the same thing.

Prep is the key to a good job. Laying down a coat of compatible primer is also recommended.

Does it require any special filler for holes or scratches?

Filler is up to you as it will be under the primer. I just finished painting my 15 with awl grip. I found during the project that the 3 m premium filler that cost twice as much as other fillers is worth it. It goes on smoother than others and has less little small holes when you sand it down. the filler you choose should be two part as I was told the two part filler will not shrink under the paint in years to come. After all the filling and sanding use an awl grip primer and when you get ready to spray final coat be sure and follow the instructions. I kind of slipped up and forgot about the thin tack coat when I started spraying the inside. After sanding out a couple of runs and getting ready to spray final coat I see what a difference the thin tack coat made

What did you do about preparing the non skid for painting? Did the Awlgrip fill in the little spider cracks that are about a 1/4 inch pretty good? What color did you find matched the Boston Whaler Color the best?

Thanks for your help !!

Jeff, the awl grip will not fill in any flaws. I was supprised to see just how unforgiveing it was. The only other boat I painted I used easy poxy. The easy poxy did not have as slick a finish but did help hide amature work. If you think you see a flaw in the surface you need to sand and fill and sand smooth before you paint.
Also I did not try to match desert tan. I painted mine fighting lady yellow and oyster white.
