Well, now that winter is taken hold I decided to fog out the motor. Well I guess the Boating Gods smilled and laughed at me. The power went out while I was running the motor, this of course shut off my well and stopped the water to the motor. The alarm sounded and I was able to shut it off within 4 seconds. My question is this, is that a big deal or am I just worrying about it for nothing?. By the way the motor is a 1992 Johnson 115 thanks BK

Better change the water pump because it's most likely fryed. The heat takes the stiffness out of the blades [ fingers ] of the water pump & it looses it's elasticity & wont pump enough water to keep her cool. Do not check the water pump to see if it's pumping while the engine is on the muffs because even without a water pump, the preasure from the hose will force the water through as if the pump is acually pumping. Rule of thumb is, change the water pump every 2 years, 3 at the very most even if you haven;t run the engine in 3 years. The reason is, even if the engine is brand new & never been run, if it sits for 3 years the fingers on the pump will stay in a fixed position & not have enough elasicity to make a nice strong contact with the walls of the pump. As long as the engine was still running smooth & the paint on the heads didn't get burnt off or the wires didn't get melted it should be ok. If the engine shut down because it got to hot, then your in trouble. While your at it, change the T stats. Sal |

Sal ... you are saying water pump, shouldn't it be water pump impeller ?? or is it the pump that actually gets switched each 2 years ? thanks |

Bert,I can only speak about the water pump of an Evinrude or Johnson but, basically the water pump consists of the impeller and the housing (plus a few gaskets and o-rings). Although you can skimp and just change the impeller, I don't think it is worth the savings. I bought a new OMC water pump kit today at a dealer and it was $65 - generics are a little less. But, I agree with Sal, that you did no damage to the engine. The water pump is probably fine, if it has been changed lately, but prudence recommends changing. Just my humble 2 cents worth...
