I just purchased a 2004 17 ft Montauk for delivery in April.
They did have one on the display floor (Long Island, NY)

Some of the changes from the 2003 regarding problems in the
Cetacea Comments ----

1-The roller guides on the new trailer are no longer black rubber but rather neoprene similar to in line skates.

2-The trailer front crank and support wheel is aft of the fold back trailer tongue so the front of the trailer is supported off the ground even with the nose folded back.

3-There are now 2 stern cleats in addition to the others

4-The new trailer from folded nose tip to real of engine measured 20' 6" with engine vertical. So I guess it will fit in most garages.

I am still trying to figure out which J Mills Bimini top to order-- front or rear fold down.

I was going to have the dealer install an Icom IC-M402S radio with 4' antenna but it came to over $500 for the package. They suggested a hand held so it looks like it will be a ICOM IC-M88 for about $288. Less range but less hassle.

The dealer recommended changing the stock fuel tanks to a pair of Tempo red plastic 12 gallon tanks #TEM630012 giving at least 24 total gallons rather than the stock 13. Total cost is $110.72 for the pair delivered to my door. On some sites they are listed as holding 13 gallons each.

I am told they will fit vertically under the helm bench seat but stick out about 2 more inches than the stock.

I am thinking of buying the new Garmin 178C plotter and depth/fishfinder. IT runs about $730 with external antenna and twin transducers

Since this is my first power boat I welcome feedback.

Here's Barney's 170 Montauk website.

He has both the Tempo tanks and Mills top in the fold forward setup.

Craig,

Make sure you check out the Garmin 188C also. It may be a few more bucks than the 178C but I found the display on the 172C (178C without sounder) to be lacking contrast and brightness compared to the 182C. Good contrast and a bright display are needed when operating in sunny condition.

If the rollers on the trailer are yellow in color, they are made from a urethane rubber.

If you intend to fish, a forward folding top is probably better. When you say "folding" I assume that means that it will lay down completely horizontal.

Get a console mount VHF with a real antenna. M-402 is $170
from West Marine. Antenna maybe $50. And a day to install
it.

Handhelds are for back up and listening to the chatter on the
drive to the ramp.

I second Chuck's advice on the installed VHF, mostly for the range over a handheld. I used my handheld for the first 8 months on my M170, and opted for the installed unit when the handheld died. I installed a $149 Standard-Horizon Eclipse, and found the best prices on the 4' Digital Antenna from http://www.bethel-marine.com

I also went with the Garmin 188C, although I don't like where I installed the external antenna. I think if I had to do it over I would probably look for the internal antenna. But for now I 'm going to re-locate the antenna to a rail mount.

Here's a link to the pictures of how I set up my M170

Best of luck on your new toy.

ghefty,

Nice pictures.

Is the under RPS storage standard or did you add it. Where did you get it if you added it? How do you like the gunnel mounted fish net/rod holder. Are they hinged?

The storage compartment was my creation. I posted some rudimentary instructions earlier http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000989.html
I tried to find another discussion (I think it was about a month ago) where someone glassed in a plywood bottom instead of starboard and was able to store 6 tackle drawers in the space, less expensive and more space. If i ever have some down time, I may change over to that design.

No hinges on the rod holder, no real need, since I always carry something there, even if it is just a boat hook and brush.

A couple of other small changes I noticed on the 170 at the Seattle boat show:
1. Changed the door to the console tackle boxes to a starboard looking material, I can't recall whether the locking mechanism was changed as well.
2. Added a spacer between the console and the top of the cooler seat.
