I got this motor from a friend and planned on putting it on my 16ft nauset. The motor runs and shifts but the carbs need to be rebuilt. I would like to rebuild them myself. Does anyone know where I can either buy new carbs or buy the rebuild kits?

Thanks

The only advice I can think of is to go to cabelas, check out the marine section, and then order yourself a swell pair of waders because that's the only way you'll be fishing. You can find parts for that ole' hunk 'o lead next to the conestoga wagons in the general store. i think Bob from "Bob's Nissequougue River Canoe Rentals" will hook you up with a nice float down the river.

PS --Think about inflating a raft or something from modell's.

The carb kits are available. Buy the floats while your at it. They are easy to rebuild but keep cleanliness in mind. No need to remove the carbs from the intake. This is not necessary. You may have to remove the starter. Just take off the top "caps". These hold the needle and seat assemblies. Spray the be-jesus out of them while they hang. Remove the air/fuel mixture screws and spray carb cleaner into them with the supplied strawlet. Remove and discard the old floats. Spray the be-jesus out of the bowls and let stand overnight. Wad up some plastic or rubber gloves and stuff the carb throats with them. Blast everything with the garden hose and dry it out. Mercury "PowerTune" is a wonderful tool for degreasing and deglazing galeries. Re=assemble and take the mixture screws out 1 1/2 turns out. They will need to be readjusted AFTER the engine is warm and preferably in the water under load (in gear). Steve

I love that engine. Steve has good advise. Also check the johnson/evenrude forum at iboats. I believe the very best way to clean out carbs is to remove all non metal parts and soak overnight in a can of Gunk carb/parts cleaner (size of paint can with dipping basket.) It will strip everything (including plastic) down to bare metal.
Also keep an eye out for a good parts engine. I had found a clean engine with a blown cylinder for $250 and have pulled the starter, trim unit, and other odds/ends when needed. If it has good compression, is not ravaged with corrosion, and you run it frequently, it will give you plenty of service.

Do a compression test before anything. Also make sure battery is cahrged REAL FRIGGIN GOOD. If she don't spin a certain rpm, it will NOT start. Choke is only on top 2 carbs so don't think something is missing. I would also replace all the tiny hoses and make sure fuel lines are new as well. These engines run like the dickens but are a bit sensitive to the right tune. Parts are easily found on e-bay and do as steve says and buy new floats.....note height before removing so you can set up the new ones.
