I'm restoring an 11' Sport with a serial showing it was built in 1976. The exterior needed repair through to the foam and I have followed the archive instructions and doing fine except the archive also indicates that only Lt. Grey was used from 1972 to 1984. Spectrum says call Whaler. Whaler says the list is correct and only Lt. Grey was used. The problem is the boat is off white nowhere near Grey. I have ground in numerous places and its white/cream to the greenish chopper glass everywhere. The interior is Desert Tan. Need advice. |

Go to a local paint store. Get about 50 different color strips of Off-white paint. Come home. In direct sunlight, compare the hull color to the paint strips. Find the color that is the best match. Take this to the gel coat store with you. Buy tinted gel coat to match. Or mail the paint strip to Spectrum and ask them to send you the matching color. I recall this same problem in my 1976 Boston Whaler SPORT 15 hull. It is clearly desert tan but according to the information at Spectrum they sent me Lt. Gray gel coat. See: http://continuouswave.com/maintenance-logs/epoxy/ for a narrative of this process. |

tom56, Boston Whaler's Outrage Grey (what Spectrum calls Lt. Grey) is not really gray at all. It is an off white that Whaler used on the exteriors of all the small Whalers up until 1984. This is according to Chuck Bennett at Whaler and my own personal experience. I do not know how to explain Jim's experience if he is saying the exterior of his 1976 Sport 15 is Desert Tan. I can, however, easily imagine that the Lt. Grey that Spectrum sent him may not have matched the color of his hull. Old Whaler hulls will typically loose some of their color over the years to do exposure to the elements, especially sunlight. |
