I've done some additional teak work on my Montauk and the first thing I learned is there are considerable differences between the types of both teak and mahogany. The supplier offered about three different types of teak and six different types of mahgony. The teak that I bought seems much more dense, darker in color and higher in quality than the original wood. The supplier that I used was Cotton-Hanlon Inc. located in Cayuta NY. I did the work several years ago so I can't comment on either price or availability.

I just purchased a piece of mahoganey for a new bow hatch cover. You need to find a specialty lumber mill in your area I found one in Stormville, NY, Condon Lumber. Great selection.

Would Red Oak be an acceptable substitute as a more
economical option ?

Red Oak - No way. Not unless you are not planning on getting your boat wet--say like indoors!
