Best preventative maintenance for the engine in general is regular use, proper oil mix and proper fogging. If you talk to a mechanic, they will say "every year" as the interval for water pump impellers. If you pin them down about it they will really tell you that they say "every year" so that the bolts remain "removable". If you let it slide too long, then the bolts get frozen in the aluminum, and it costs extra $$$ to finish the repair. Paying a mechanic $60-80/hr to drill out and re-tap bolt holes gets expensive quick! After I get a few more projects complete at the house, I intend to drop the lower unit on my 1985 Johnson 70 and replace the the impeller. In the backyard, it might cost $50-70 for the parts kit. I have no clue what the dealer charges for such repairs as I've grown up swinging wrenches around outboards since I was old enough to hand dad the wrench he needed...
Any shop should be able to quote a rough $$$ for the water pump if you call them. However, I suggest you get the appointment lined up now if you intend to do it as the shops get really busy once boating weather arrives... (in Florida they're busy year round!)
