I am very recent new owner of a 63 17' Whaler. I have stripped the inside of old rotten plywood console and want to redo paint/gelcoat...preferrably gelcoat. There is only one coat of paint over original, my uncle was second owner and has had the boat since early 70's. The interior is generally in good shape but does need some sanding and minor repair of fiberglass and multiple rusted out screw holes. Does not seem to have any spots where the fiberglass has pulled away for the flotation. My question is how much of old paint and original gelcoat do I have to remove before I can have a good surface for applying new gelcoat to interior and where is best place to oder it from? And what is the heavier dark coating on the exterior bottom of the boat, it is noticably thicker than the upper white surface. The exterior is in good shape and sound but I would eventually like to redo it as well.
