I recently installed a Lowrance M68C GPS/sonar unit. The sonar is a small-screen color display and it comes with a 200MHz transducer. Temp is included. The images look pretty good to me, it's my first sonar so I don't have anything to compare it with. The GPS combo unit was only $100 more than the sonar unit alone, so I went ahead and got the combo unit. I've been navigating around here with a compass, a depth finder and a chart for years with no problems, and I almost didn't get the GPS, but I figured if I ever found a good grouper hole I might as well be able to find it again.

Well as it turns out, the GPS is pretty durn cool; it's my new favorite toy. The unit comes with some very basic maps, which can't be upgraded. But one of the things I liked about the Lowrance maps is that major navigational aids are on the maps. You still need paper charts, but the Lowrance maps are detailed enough so that 9 times out of 10 you can plot out a route without manually entering any numbers. Pretty cool. The maps also include information about tides and currents. You can download the entire mapset from Lowrance's web site if you want to play around with them (you're actually downloading a software emulator that works exactly like the actual unit).

I suppose if I really needed a lot of detail to plot out a route, I can use the Maptech Mapserver website to get the numbers. But I'm not sure there is going to be much need for that; not sure where I'm going to go in a 17 foot boat where I'm going to need that much detail.

The color depthfinder is really easy to read in all kinds of light, and that makes up a little for the small screen. The small screen is somewhat more of a handicap for the GPS mapping feature. I figure if you're really serious about GPS charting this is not the unit for you, by any means. From my viewpoint, as someone wanting a compact unit, and was willing to spend $300 for a sonar anyway, I think this combo unit is a great value for $400.
