I have a 1991 13'w a 91 30hp yamy and need to replace my cables they have cracked open and rusted thru at the bend near motor. What cables do you guys recommend? also whats the best way to reduce the needed slack for motor movement?

Realrez:

My first choice would be the engine manufacturer's control cables. Adapters are rarely needed for installation. I have used Teleflex "red jacket" control cables with great success. You can find them pretty cheap on e-bay.
My 17-Montauk came used, with 14 foot cables run straight to the engine. When I installed a new engine, I ran the cables with the bended steering cable, and then added a 270 degree, 12 inch loop at the engine, as recommended by the engine manufacturer. Measuring this was a little tricky. I used an old cable to measure from the helm to the stern, then from that point I used the same cable to measure from the stern to the engine, including the stern bends and loop. 22 feet!
