I use either Sea Foam or Engine Tuner by Bombardier to de-carb my engines. No, I don't just pour it in to the tank. I remove the carburetor or injector air intake cover, start the engine and spray into each carb or throttle body until the can is empty. Run the engine only at idle or fast idle, but not over 900 RPM while spraying into the cavities. Toward the end I'm trying to flood the engine out (V6 engine). As soon as the engine either floods out or dies, I shut it down. I remove the plugs and spray a can into the cylinders and turn the engine over by hand to be sure the solution has saturated in, behind, and under the rings. Then I put the plugs back in (but don't tighten), tilt the engine horizontal so the solution sits on top of the pistons. I put the cowling back on and let it sit overnight. The next day I remove the cowling and spark plugs. I use an air compressor to blow the solution out of each cylinder and turn the engine over again about 10 times by hand, not with the starter. Then I put all the plugs back in (and index the plugs--only mandatory on Bombardier's Evinrude FICHT engines and for racing engines or high-performance injected engines.). Next I either launch the boat (recommended), or put it on the hose, and start it. Keep your hand on the key because the engine will want to over-rev and burn off the excess solution. If it over-rev's, shut her down and re-start her again. You may have to shut her down sometimes up to three times before you burn off all the solution. If the boat is in the water, just start her and put her in gear and the prop will give enough resistance so the engine won't over-rev as it would if she were in neutral. It is very, very, very important to de-carb. Carbon build up is on top of the list of the things that destroy engines (and right next to it is over-propping). I know it sounds like a lot of work, but it really isn't. And it's absolutely essential in maintaining a healthy engine. I know, there are guys that have never done a de-carb and scoff at it, but the oils and fuel of today aren't as they were just a few years ago. They're playing with fire by thinking they are smart or cocky saying "BS--my engine doesn't need it." Only a fool would think that way, but this world is full of fools. Sal, Would the same be true of four-stroke engines? I know you are mainly a two-stroke guy but is there anything we four-stroker owners should know to prevent problems in our motors? Thanks for the tips. |

I de-carbon my engine every 50 hours as recommended by OMC and Bombardier. Yes, four-strokes are not immune to carbon build up and must also be done. Keep in mind, both the two-stroke and four-stroke engines are going to smoke like you can't imagine until all that carbon is burned off. It takes more than a few minutes to stop smoking. I recommend you do it out on the water some place because when you start her back up you won't be able to see your house in all of the smoke. I'm serious. It's gonna smoke like a huge fire. There's no need to run the hell out of the engine after the treatment, just take a nice leisurely cruise, not a wide-open blast. It is recommended to replace the plugs after the treatment because you won't believe the residue that is going to come out of your engine. Do the treatment and come back here and tell us how the engine is now running and if there's any difference in the way she idles or runs at WOT. If you have a carburated car or truck, run some through it and watch the difference. |

Sal, Is the procedure the same for an engine that has never been decarbonized? My Yamaha motors have 478 hours (150-HP) and 350 hours (225-HP). I bought some Yamaha Ring Free but the mechanic said not to do the shock treatment because it could loosen some "chunks" of carbon and score the cylinders. Just use a heavy maintainence treatment. What are your thoughts? I have not done it yet. |

RJG, the treatment liquifies the hard carbon so it dosen't break off or build up. Ring free is an excellent product and I would most certainly do a shock treatment. The reason for leaving the solution in overnight is to make sure the carbon that is in the engine gets completely liquified. There wont be any chunks, it turns to a light tar like substace and gets burned and blown out the exhaust. Hopefull Seahorse will chine in because he's the master who taught me and many many more like me. Trust me, when he tells you something, you can take it to the bank. |

Sal, How often are you de-carbonizing? [Every 50 hours] Great advice. I have done mine a number of times as well. But its time again for another can. Will try it using your procedures next time. I like the idea of letting it soak in overnight and getting it under the rings. What do you think about having the heads opened up having it manually decarbonized? Or do you think that doing the regular can thing is enough. |

The factory recommends every 50 hours, so thats what I do & while I'm at it, I also change the lower unit grease & clean & re-gap my plugs. I change plugs every 75 - 100 hours, or when the engine dosen't start on the first 1/2 turn of the flywheel [ seriously, no more than 1 second on the key ]. No need to remove the head [ s ], just making alot of work for your self & replacing head gaskets. Sal |

Sal I would never run it on the hose in the back yard , you have to blow her out, no need for an hour @ WOT but I respectfully disagree with you if you think it's OK to idle it after she soaked in those solvents, blow her out good. Then it's not a bad idea to clean the plugs. NEVER put boat in gear on the muffs & hose in back yard because theres no load on the prop & she can run away causing damage to engine, also the WP may not get enough H2O. When I was a kid, my friend & myself decarbed his 85 OMC in the backyard & the Fire department showed up after the neighbor called thinking the garage was fully engulfed due to the smoke, they werent too happy ! LOL But your right on , decarbing is important.. Also, I've owned most Outboard brands & I find the Merc power tune is the best decard solvent { spray can }. This stuff is strong..! |

Alan, I didn't say to let the engine idle after the treatment. I said there's no need to run at wide open throttle & a nice cruise will blow out what is in the engine. There is really no need to run her wide open after the treatment & personally I wouldn't put the coals to her until after all the crud has been blown out. 3500 - 4000rpms [ on the water, not the hose ]is plenty rpms to blow out that crap. "NEVER" run an outboard engine over 1500...2000 rpms maximum in neutral or on the hose because these engines are designed to be run under a load which means in the water & in gear only. Personally I find "Sea Foam" [ aka "Deep Creep" = SeaFoam in a pressurized can ] to be the strongest fastest working de-carb I've used. I do like "Engine Tuner" by Bombardier also. Sal |

Thanks for your time and advice Sal. I appreciate the details of your procedure and will do as soon as things warm up around here. Since I discovered this stuff last fall, I have been reincarnating snow blowers that won't start with Deep Creep and Seafoam - my cousin has used it for years but never told anyone his secret on how to get crudded up 2 strokes to run. He has picked off I bet a dozen Johnson and Ev 3 HP that wouldn't run over the years including one that folds in half and comes with a case. Those who know those motors know they are sweet. He picks up 15 HP and under all the time, gives 'em the treatment and turns them back into two pull motors. |

This is a great topic! Thanks Sal for sharing your experience. I have been waiting until we get some warmer weather over here to de-carbon my 90-hp 2-stroke Merc. I have a couple of cans of Quicksilver "Power Tune" that I will be using. Is there any way of doing this without having the boat in the water? The problem is letting it sit overnight as I always trailer my boat. The instructions on the can of "Power Tune" state : "let the engine stand 15 minutes or longer". I also think that letting it stand longer would dissolve more carbon, but how long? Wouldn't letting it stand too long have an adverse effect on the carbs or injectors if the solvents have evaporated? Would using a fuel additive like "Quickleen" increase the time intervals for de-carbonizing? Thanks, Erik |

Sal: Thanks for the decarb procedure. Makes sense to me as I have always considered the directions on the various cans of de-carb juice did not go far enough. Looking foward to decarbing all three motors after commissioning this spring. |

Mercury Marine has three products of this type for engine care: • QuicKleen Engine Treatment--"Unique fuel tank additive for 2- and 4-cycle marine engines that combats buildup of combustion deposits, corrosion and performance-inhibiting effects caused by using poor quality fuels." This product comes in a bottle and is usually poured into the fuel tank is a recommended ratio to the gasoline. • Fuel System Cleaner--"Maximizes fuel economy and horsepower and extends spark plug life. It does this by cleaning the carburetor, fuel system, intake valves and injectors." This product comes in a bottle and is usually poured into the fuel tank in a recommended ratio to the gasoline. • Power Tune--"Keeps your engine running smoothly and quietly by helping remove internal carbon, varnish and gum deposits. Not for use during storage." This product comes in an aerosol spray. Bombardier has similar products for engine care: • Engine Tuner--"To prevent harmful carbon, gum and varnish build-up, use once every 50 hours of operation. Just spray through the carburetor intake of any 2- or 4-cycle engine." This product comes in an aerosol can. • 2+4® Fuel Conditioner--Routinely added to the fuel tank in a recommended ratio to the gasoline. Yamaha also has: • Ring Free--"Special formula removes deposits that cause ring stick and wear. Cleans carbon and varnish from rings, pistons, combustion chamber, intake and exhaust manifolds, and carburetor. Aids in improving power and efficiency while extending engine life." Guys, thanks for the kind words, but the credit goes to Seahorse, as he's the guy who taught me how & what to use. Tony, Seafoam comes in a non-presurized can & I pore it into a sprayer [ hand sprayer for chemicals only from your local hardware store, not the cheap one guys, the one that costs about $8 - $9.00 ] & Seafoam also comes in a presurized can but it's called "Deep Creep" made by the Seafoam company, but only 12 oz instead of the 16 oz in the un-presurized can. I think the companies say at least 15 minutes or longer to insure the person dosen't run it out in 5 minutes. I kept my boat in Half Moon Bay Ca [ 65 miles from my house ] & ran it through [ into ] my engine after a salmon trip in the afternoon, thinking I'm going fishing again in the morn [ Sunday morn ] but the weather turned to crap & I didn't return to my boat until 1 week later & the carbon & solution were total liquid & passed just beautiful. I don't think it evaporates as fast as you might think. I also use a can of Chevrons "Techron" about every other tank & do try & use Chevron fuel when ever possible just because of the carbon cleaning agents in their fuel. Kinda hard to pass an " Arco " station with 87 octane fuel at $1.79 & try & find a Chevron station with 87 octane fuel at $2.09 per gallon. Sal. |

Sal, I get the de-carbonizing and have done it. It's amazing the mess that spews out. I know Yamaha highly reccomends it on their new engines. However, I've been told that that sort of 'shock treatment' should only be done once. After that, regular use of something like 'Ring Free' in your gas should do the trick and any more 'shock treatments' would b unnecessary. What's your take on that advice..? |

Sal; Would you recommend this procedure on a Mercury Optimax (1998 135hp), as well? I've used Chevron and Quikleen on it regularly, and the motor runs great. This may be a dumb question given that the Ficht is also direct injection, but I'm a bit paranoid about doing anything to my motor (the experience of blowing a powerhead will do that to you). Lars |

Skiff, no matter what you use in your fuel,[ I also use "Carbon Guard" your still going to get some carbon buildup & over a period of time it's gonna need to be removed. When the factory says to de-carbon every 50 hours, I would follow their recommendation. Lars, absoltly. Mercs de-carbon agent is called "Power Tune",...use it as described on the can & use it every 50 to 75 hours of use,...[ shock treatment ]. It's certainly "NOT" going to hurt your engine. I have been preaching de-carb to a good buddy & he scoffs & says he dosen't believe in mechanic in a can. Finally talked him into it & his first words out of his mouth after the treatment was,...."Holy Sh!!" this engine has never run this smooth or had this much power, I should have listened to you 3 years ago. On my Opti DFI engines, I use Seafoam. Remove the fuel water separater cartridge, dump out the gas, and fill it with Seafoam. Install, filters, launch the boat, pump the bulbs, and start her up. After about 5 minutes at idle, warming up, the engines will start to stumble, give them some more gas until they just finally die after getting a full dose of seafoam. Let them soak for 20-30 minutes. Then, remove the cartridge again, empty it out into the fuel tank, and refill with gas only. Re-install, pump the bulbs, and restart. It may take some good cranking to get them to start. Don't overheat your starter, or try this with marginal batteries. When it starts, run at idle, preferrably in gear to put a load on, at 1000-1400 rpm until the temp gauges come up, then put her up on a slow plane. It is not recommended per Merc to spray anything into the air plenum because of the temp and throttle position sensors in there. BillS |

Sal, great thread and very informative.....but wait. I just got the surprise of my life this morning when talking with the mechanic at my dealership...he says under no circumstances should I use Power Tune (or any similar spray product) on my Merc 115efi as it can dry out the lubrication in my efi system and cause serious damage to the engine. I am no stranger to this product and have used it several times on smaller 2-stroke outboards with excellent results. I challenged him to prove to me why any current technology outboard (EFI, carb, DFI) cannot use this product. He re-stated these products are fine for carbs and DFI but no good for EFI. I asked him how I was supposed to deal with carbon on my engine and he said only use the Merc Quickleen fuel additive - not any type of spray. Do I believe him? NOPE....could I be wrong? SURE. This is the same mechanic who told me it was fine to trailer my 170 with the 115efi tilted all the way up and resting on that little metal MAINTENANCE support lever. Needless to say, I am a bit skeptical bout anything this guy says. Anyone know the straight skinny on why one could not use this product on an EFI engine? |

Just a couple of months ago the propeller shaft broke on my 1969 55hp Evinrude. I tried to repair it, but was to big of headache. I decide to take a part the motor to see what it was made of and see how the inside looked. With putting over a 100 plus hour a year on the motor since I purchased it new. The inside of the motor looked like it just came out of the factor. No scratches on the side wall. Very little carbon build up if any at all. The only thing I did to the motor was run a good quality oil. I never added any kind of carbon clean in the gas. I could only see using a de-carbon cleaner if you do a lot of slow trolling or a lot of idling. Like kingfishing. I did neither I just would go crusing around the bay mostly runing the motor 3000 to 4000 rpm. |

Newer motors are more prone to carbon buildup than vintage two strokes. They run much hotter combustion temps in an effort to meet EPA emission standards. Those higher temps create more carbon. On older two strokes, there was an overabundance of fuel. A lot of it went out the ports unburned, and also helped to cool the motor. That raw fuel is a solvent, and it keeps the internal like pistons and exhaust housing clean of contaminents as it passes across those components. So, what you saw on your old outboard should not be taken as gospel, and applied to new motors. Ignoring the need to decarbon a DFI or HPDI 2 stroke is an invitation for an early demise to those motors from stuck or broken rings and scored cylinders. BillS |

My above post about not using Power Tune on EFI engines is not correct. I confirmed with Mercury Customer Service there is no harm in using spray de-carbonizer in the 115efi or any other Merc efi. |

cc13, my thoughts on just running it through the fuel line is, the de-carb gets burned off with the fuel & dosen't have a chance to soak or saturate the carbon because it's getting burned off before it even reaches it. By completely drowning the pistons & cylinders with the solution your absolutly sure the carbon thats way back inside between the rings & pistons is being liquified not just lightly sprayed with the fuel. By shutting the engine off with the solution in the fuel [ I feel ] there's only a residure left in the cylinder to attack the carbon because the fuel got burned off & so did the anti-carbon remover. Your method might work but I just don't feel it gets deep enough to really saturate any carbon in the hard places to get to. Sal |

What works for Steve works for me - I'm going to do this to my 6 HP Johnson (my E-Tecs shouldn't need it for awhile!) this weekend. Dave |

Sal, Late last summer my 1992 200HP Yamaha 2-stroke was starting to idle rough and would hesitate and stumble somewhat when accelerating. I thought the carbs might need rebuilt (they have never been rebuilt), but decided to try your Sea Foam treatment first. About five years ago I ran Yamaha Ring Free (in 40 gals. of gas) thru the engine and noticed no excessive smoking or any change to the engine performance at all. I bought a can of Sea Foam and a can of Deep Creep. I removed the air intake for the carbs and sprayed the Deep Creep into the carbs at about a 800 RPM idle on the hose. I was surprised I couldn't get the engine to stall out. I emptied almost the entire can into the carbs and shut off the engine. The engine smoked excessively during this procedure. Next, I replaced the carb air intake and removed the spark plugs. I sprayed the remainder of the Deep Creep into each cylinder as I rotated the flywheel by hand. I then tilted the engine into the horizontal position and poured about a 1/3 of a cup of Sea Foam into each cylinder and rotated the flywheel about ten times. Next, I reinstlled the spark plugs and left the engine tilted over night. The next morning I tilted the engine to the horizontal position and fired her up. I set the idle around 900 RPM and was surprised that the engine did not race, but did run rough for several minutes and smoked like the devil. I let it run at idle for 10 minutes on the hose and by then most of the smoking had subsided. Last weekend, on our trip to Michigan, was the first time I had it in the water since the Sea Foam treatment. It started normally and smoked more than usual. On our run out to the Sleeping Bear Dunes with Dave in "Gambler" I had a chance to really open it up. After this 10 mile run most of the smoking had stopped and the idle and acceleration were smoother than it had been for a long time. My wife even thought the engine seen quieter! In conclusion I think the Sea Foam/Deep Creep combo certainly cleaned out any carbon/build up present in the engine and carbs. I had brought along a fresh set of plugs (thinking the plugs would need changing), but the Sea Foam apparently cleaned them as well! I did not notice a great deal of crud present in the exhaust hub after this procedure and honestly think the engine did not have a great deal of carbon build up. I would definitely recommend this treatment to anyone and will repeat every couple of years. Thanks, Sal! Steve |

I just did this procedure as well on my twin 1991 Yamaha 70's about a week ago. Although the difference was not night and day, I do belive they are running a bit smoother. Also, I think the engines were decabed not too long before I bought her last year so I may not have noticed as dramatic an effect. However, when I tilted my engines after pouring the seafoam into the cylinders, the seafoam was dripping pretty heavily out of the carbs and into my splash well and making a big mess. I had to tilt the engines back down a little bit. Is this normal?? My engines still smoked like crazy the next day when I started it back up. |

After I was finished there was a black vaseline like sludge all over the ground and on the garden hose. That was from about 170 hours on a 1999 175 FICHT. I didn't even go through the trouble of taking out the plugs and letting sit over night but I will this week when I do it again. Marc |

I've been using the OMC Engine Tuner with (mostly) Sal's method since the first Engine Tuner came out.However, I omit the part about spraying the cylinders. I just use most of the can thru the carb,finally killing the engine with it.Tilt 'er up, and leave it overnight.On occasion, I have not left it overnight, and run it again after about 90 minutes.Same results either way, and usually pick up 2-300 rpm's on the V6 OMCs.Overnight is best. I also buy 3hp Johnrudes no-runners on Craigslist for $25, run a can thru 'em, and sell 'em for $200/300 bucks the next week($300 a week before trout season). This procedure should be taught to every kid that ever pulls a starter cord on anything.Lawnmower won't start because of bad gas? Do it thru the plughole! Everytime you use this procedure, you will slap yourself on the forehead, and wonder how you got this smart,this fast. Thanks Sal, for putting it out here! Best 'snakeoil' product there is. |

Sal et al, My problem: I have an early 80's Mariner 3.5 long shaft that I have used as trolling motor on 1968 Sakonnet and kicker on my 1980 ictoria 18 sailboat. It had not been used for about 3 years until I tried it last summer on my Sakonnet. After abut 20 mins or so of exhaustive rope pulling I finally got it to start and run pretty good at idle. However, as soon as I'd try to speed up a little at idle or in-gear (while tied to dock), it would immediately stall. Would continue to start Ok but still stalled out. Gave up and put Mariner back in garage. Son-in-law thinks he can do carb rebuild this spring but wondering if I should try your decarb procedure first before attempting carb rebuild Thoughts and recommendations please for my Mariner. Jim |

Last summer, I had bought a very used 1989 Jetski that barley even idled. Removed the plugs poured almost a whole can of seafoam in each of the two cylinders, let it sit over night….holly mackerel driving around on the lake for the first 10 minutes was like nothing I had even seen…so much smoke, all the exhaust gas comes out the nozzle not under water like an outboard, I got pulled over by the marine police… Now the ski idles sooth and runs great, all for about $20. |

Jim B., I think a carb rebuild is certainly in order with the symptoms you describe. However, a healthy dose of Sea Foam will certainly clean it out. It cannot hurt, only help. I add Sea Foam to every tankful. It never hurts. It is a fuel stabilizer as well as a cleaner. With an engine that is used infrequently, it is a bit of insurance. |

Question... I am in process of de-carbonizing using OMC Engine Tuner. Have done the shots through the carb, and currently have the spray sitting in the combustion chamber overnight as per Sal's instructions above. Tomorrow I will blow out with compressed air then run motor. My question is: Can I do this run of the motor using a flush bag/drum as opposed to muffs? I don't have muffs that really work well on my Johnson. The seal is never good and doesn't get much water flowing out the telltale unless I'm holding the things on tightly, but I'll need my hands for the other tasks like controlling throttle or switching off if overrevs etc. Can I use a flush bucket? I realize a lot of crud will probably be exhausted out the prop and into the water, and this could be potentially sucked back into the cooling water intakes. Anyone done this in a bag/drum with success? |

Hey deano sorry ,, I'm not sure if you read this whole post and opened the link to the pic,, in a nut shell i used the factory recommended cleaner and winterize fogging oils for years ,, and than i heard of sea-foam,, scroll up till ya find the pic link and take a look at what was deposited in my motor and exhaust over the years ,, I still use the fogging oil in the winter but that's all ,, now its sea foam,, i would not recommend a bucket /bag or barrel,,if you have to duct tape the muffs on do it ,,you don't want what your seeing back inside your motor anywhere |

My friend is an authorized Yamaha mechanic. At a dealer convention they told all the mechanics their way of shock treating an engine. Basically the same as Sal's above but you take a 1/2 gallon or less of gas and can of either Techron, Berryman's B-12, Seafoam, etc and mix them together(add oil if not injected of course). Put gas line in bottle and let engine run at high idle until mixture is empty but still in line and carbs. Anotherwords, when it is JUST empty, shut off engine. Remove plugs and pour/spray some cleaner in each hole. Let it sit overnight. Hook engine up to regular fuel supply and start engine and run it until the smoke clears. This not only decarbs engine but cleans the SNOT out of your carbs, etc. You can actually use straight cleaner with no gas and it will SHOULD unstick a frozen ring...no BS and all from the mouth of Yamaha. If carbs are clean, use Sals way. If carbs are acting funny, use mine...either way you will have a spotless engine inside...but your driveway will be a mess and it can even kill your grass if done on the lawn. I used to do it every 50-100 hours or at season's end as well. |

Well, after starting it up today there was very little smoke. In fact, when I lowered the leg after leaving it up overnight, it looks like a lot of the stuff ran out the drain hole down the bottom of the leg before I even had a chance to get the muffs on and start it up... Is that bad? No more smoke than usual amount that comes from burning the 2-stroke mix?? Pulled the plugs and they seemed oily but not cruddy. So I gave the chambers another hit of spray and left em for 15 mins. This time I started it all up a little quicker and was getting the smoke I thiought I should be getting. Still not a lot and still no where near looking like your house is on fire. I ran the engine until most of it had burnt off. Pulled the plugs and this time a few bits of crud on the plugs... How does that work? I leave it for 15 mins and get cruds, leave overnight and get nothing? Should I assume that the overnight treatment liquified most of the crap, and because most of the engine tuner seemed to run out the leg when I lowerred it, that is why I didnt get much smoke the first time? Also, how "bright" should the piston heads look? Shining a torch down em, they sstill seemed to have some deposits on them that look rather hard. What did I do wrong? Or do I just ened to treat it more? |

I tried the stuff in a can from the dealer for 15 years ,,it does not work as well as a can of sea foam ,, 1 1/2 gal of gas with oil than add 1 16oz can of sea foam,, run motor for 15 min at idle let set 1 hour run again for 15 and let set 1 hour run again for 15 and let set overnight,,do everything at idle no high rpms ,,see the picture posted way back in this thread,, or email me and ill send you a pic of my prop ,, |

ALSO, you can spray some berrymans (stronger than sea foam) in the cylinders and let them sit over night. Motor turns on almost instantly, I de-carbon probably 2 times during the season for the heck of it. |

To turn over an engine by hand, rotate the flywheel by hand. Take precautions against accidental engine starting. |

Turning the engine over by hand is "ONLY" done with all the spark plugs removed. When the plugs are out, there is no compression & the fly wheel will turn very easy by putting your hand [s] on it & turning it clockwise. Just know there will be so much smoke, it "WILL" scare you, & your neighbors will most likely call the fire dept if their not warned & aware of what your doing. When your done, do not think you must blow the engine out by reving the heck out of it, just let it idle for about 15 minutes & treat it as you would if you didn't de-carb it [ normal running ]. You "WILL" notice a big difference in how smooth the engine will run after the treatment. Sal |

Another success story...I followed Sal's instructions over the past two days and can tell an obvious improvement in my engine. The only step that I did not follow was bto low out the excess Sea Foam with compressed air as I did this in my slip. One note is that I was not able to get the engine to stall out when spraying the Deep Creep in the carbs. I was hoping that it would have solved the bogging problem I have posted about in the past but unfortunately that is here to stay. I have performed numerous tests and attempted a number of solutions and this was my last ditch effort. Either way, I have a better running engine than I did yesterday. |

I used the decab method and it worked great. I had two cylinder down,reading 90 and now spark and compression on both. Its starting to miss some, but i suspected the carbs.... |
