Quite a few Whalers were sold in the late 90's and early 00's with Raymarine radar, VHF, sonar, and GPS packages. Most of the GPS systems were of the differential type and were not chartplotters. Has anyone who has this package upgraded to a newer chartplotter display from Raytheon and, if so, have you any advice for those of us who want to upgrade?

For a short period of time, Whaler had a factory incentive where the Raytheon electronics were included with the purchase of a new boat. They came un-installed, and it was up to the dealer, or purchaser to make the installation of the gear. That's why you see a lot of Raytheon equipment on older whalers. That period in time also coincided with Raytheon getting heavily into the recreational marine market versus their previous focus on commercial marine gear. I know that the older radomes work fine with the newer displays. The bus between the displays has been upgraded from the old NEMA and SeaTalk to a higher speed protocol that permits full graphic overlays. The new fishfinders with DSP also work with their old transducers. Raytheon's tech support was great when I used them several years ago and they sent me some good reference material on how to interface various gear together and make it all talk to each other. BillS |
