I just read the Frozen Steering on Montauk 170 and it appears I have similar symptoms with my 13'. In my case I believe the grease has hardened during the winter.

The steering cable is a single starboard side routed cable. Where should I apply penetrating spray to try and free it? If I can free it, how do I remove or clean out the hardened grease?

I'm no expert, but does grease harden? If it hardens, does it harden to the point where it is like glue? And can it harden in just a matter of months? It doesn't make sense to me.

I don't know anything about your steering system, so I don't think I should try to give advice. If you've already read the advice for the Montauk, then I would be repeating the same thing anyway.

Good luck!

Steve

Yes, grease does harden, BUT that is not geneally the problem. it's corrosion.
Penetrating sprays and "some" physical exertion/movement is usually enogh to get things free.
Then, the key is "prevention".
