I noticed that the old mahogany consoles on the 16ft7in whalers had the helm in the center of the console, I am putting in a new console and haven't mounted the helm yet (this weekend) I was wondering what advantage does it give to mount the helm in the center or if it even matters? I will be going with a 18ft cable-

I would consider how you use the boat. I have an old Sakonnet with the middle steering position.
1. Great if you fish by your self as this position can be reached equally well from both sides and centers you in the boat while under way and gives you something to hold on to.
2. If someone is with you are they sitting next to you while under way a starboard position might be what you want.

I don't think it makes sense to change this position from what the factory supplied for your boat.
