Author Topic:   Trim/Tilt Switch Current Rating

Winkie came equipped with a generic-looking rocker switch mounted next to the binnacle. The rocker switch is for the motor tilt and trim.

This rocker switch stays "on" until you move it back to the neutral center position. I am in fear of burning up my tilt/trim motor. I'd like to replace it with a switch that only functions when you're touching it. I believe these are called "momentary" switches. Tohora Iti is equipped with this type of tilt/trim switch, and I like it.

How do I determine the proper current rating for a replacement switch?

Usually the Trim switch only carries the current for a relay coil. Almost any switch will be of sufficient rating. I agree, you want a momentary contact switch.

Most UL-rated switches have their current and voltage rating marked on them. You could replace the existing switch with one of similar ratings. However, it does not sound like the existing switch is the original. It is unusual for it to not be a momentary-action switch.

Thank you, Jim. The switch that is now installed does look to be a generic replacement. I shall remove it and buy a similarly-rated momentary style rocker switch.
