I'm looking to add an ammeter to my Montauk and assumed I would just pop in a Teleflex Red International to match the other gauges I have. However, I was surprised to see that Teleflex gauges are +/- 60 amps. Since most of the time I'm going to be running more like +/- 7 amps, I would hardly see any deflection with that gauge.

Does anyone know of comparable water-resistant gauges that might have a better scale (+/- 20 or 30 amp)? Alternatively, is there any way to modify a 60 amp gauge to amplify the scale?

Thanks in advance.

Sail16 - changing the range on the Teleflex ammeter is not all that difficult - simply adding a specific resistor. Lets see if other meter suggestions come in - if not, let me know. You might also contact Teleflex with your question - they may have ammeters of other ranges. --- Jerry/Idaho

I have two, brand new Teleflex red international 60 amp ammeter gauges that I have never installed. My engines have 40 amp charging, but after buying these I found ammeter gauges are specifically not recommended for outboards, and are difficult to do.

The wiring requires heavy 10 gauge leads connected directly into the engine electrical system. Mercury specifically advised me not install these, and offers no such OEM gauge. Check with your engine manufacturer before you waste your money like I did. I think this is an inboard item.

I have never seen ammeters on an outboard instrument cluster

There is a Teleflex Ammeter that uses a shunt to keep the high amperage/heavy wires away from the helm, but you're looking at over $150.00 for the gauge and shunt. It's in the "heavy Duty" gauge line and is +60 0 -60 . You can probably just use a voltmeter..... http://www.teleflexcables.com/GAShome.html ..... http://www.teleflexcables.com/faq.html
