Just had a Boston Whaler dealer install new [stern] cleats, port and starboard on a 2003 Boston Whaler 170 MONTAUK. The dealer was baffled as I was to learn that these were not even an option on 2003 model year boats. I noticed that six weeks after installation a small amount of dark stain color, rusty, forming around the NEW cleats only. Dealer used Boston Whaler style [cleats] and water proof silicone. Any suggestions as to why they are rusting ? Ken

All cleats are not created equal. The footprint side should be polished, preventing rust from forming. Most cleats are not polished on the bottom. It is one extra step the polisher has to go through. In this day and age everything is price, price, price, cheap, cheap, cheap and made in China. They don't make em like they used to. If you take a piece of 316 stainless that has not been polished and put it in a salt environment, it will rust. Polishing is not only for looks. It sounds like they cheaped out on the aftermarket cleats. It doesnt matter how much goop you put the cleats down with. They should be polished on the bottom. Good luck. |

Best to use the POST-CLASSIC forum to discuss the newer boats, particularly ones first designed after c.1990. |
