I took the bow rails off my 91' montauk over the winter and now am eager to re-attach with the fall, and rougher seas, on the way. I'd like to get the connection as waterproof as possible. Wondering if I need a caulk, silicone etc. when anchoring the screw and what kind folks prefer. If so, what's the best way to apply the caulk..to the shaft of screw or to the base of the fitting?

Thanks,

Matt

Old holes should be filled with an epoxy and redrilled later with an appropriate size VIX bit to center the holes right without over drilling them I did this and put a squirt of silicone caulk into the hole just before inserting the screw with excellent results. VIX bits can be found at cabinet hardware supply places such as rockler.com good luck its easy. DWS.
