Not really a boat question, but many of you may be familiar with my engine and can help. I have a 1985 Mercury 25 hp outboard on my 1972 13' whaler. Engine will not idle but will run if I put it in gear before it stalls out. Once warmed up it seemingly overheats and eventually hot steam comes out of rubber hose rather then water. The hose is attached near the top spark plug. Shouldn't there be a steady stream of water coming out of that hose?Starting the engine becomes increasingly difficult after it has run for a time. I don't want to start it again for fear or warping the cylinders and causing further damage. Can someone help me pinpoint the problem? Would it be the cooling system or water pump. Or is the water pump the cooling system? What exactly does the water pump do vs. a cooling system? Obviously I'm not very engine savy but would hate to spend alot of money on a parts and labor if I could possibly replace myself. I saved over $200.00 ordering and installing a new switchbox and would like to do the same with this current problem. Should I start by ordering a water pump kit? If so, is it easy to install? How do I get to the water pump to inspect for possible damage?

The water pump inpeller is the heart of the cooling system and it pushes water through the cooling passages. Yes, water should be coming out the pee hole... no steam. Replace the water pump or have it replaced and that should solve the problem. Happy Whalin'... Clark... Spruce Creek Navy |
