I've got a 2003 Mercury 90HP 4 Stroke. The factory service manual specifies Mercury Pure Blend Gear Lube for the lower unit. The local retailers all carry the High Performance gear lube but not the Pure Blend.

From various sources the Pure Blend is traditional gear lube and the High Performance is a synthetic. The two can not be combined, but it is possible to switch from one to the other after fully draining the lower unit.

Does anyone have any experience with the High Performance gear lube vs. the Pure Blend? Can I switch from one to the other...as I am assuming the I have Pure Blend in the lower unit now and have been able to buy the High Performance lube.

As long as you drained the lower unit you can switch to the High Performace.I run this in mine.Probably the reason they only stock the High Performance is that it does'nt cost that much more and is safe(better) to run in all motors.
