How does this particular gauge funciton. It seems to be mounted on two studs with springs that push it up. Mind pushes against the clear plastic access cover.

The fuel gauge works by way of a magnet on the float inside the tank. The magnet makes the needle move. The gauge is mounted on springs to push it tight against the clear deck plate so that it can be read even if there is condensation under the plate.
This is a very simple, reliable and effective system.
