Background: My classic restoration of a 1967 Whaler standard is going to require a new motor. After pouring through all the [articles] in both PERFORMANCE and REPAIR/MODS, it seems clear a decent choice is the Tohatsu 40 HP TLDI. Weighing in at 206 lbs in standard shaft size trim, it seems a logical choice. Or lack of choice I should say. All the other new 25's and 30's are coming in at over 170 as four-strokes (Not including jackplate), so the extra 20 to 30-lbs for a 40-HP seems small potatoes. I digress.

The real question here is how is the steering slave going to clear the curved transom of the classic 13? Has anyone re-powered with one of the new Tohatsu's and dealt with the issue? Does the mechanism clear the transom? I have been looking for a picture of the Tohatsu steering mechanism so if I need to plan for it during the restoration I find out before rather than later.

Pictures of someone's installation on a classic 13 would be appreciated. Please, no suggestions of digging out a hole in the transom, as I have seen Whalers molested in this way to provide for the steering bar.

Thanks!

Isnt this motor equipped with tilt tube steering? The steering cable will fit into the tilt tube and will clear the top of the transom. Or are you thinking of staying with cable (wire rope and pulley) steering or something along those lines?

on the 15" transoms trying to use the tilt tube is next to impossible, unless the transom is notched. You'll need to make a offset mount for the steering cable and a "L" bracket off the motor to tie too.I'll post a pic of the setup i have on our 2005 40 hp nissan carbed 2 stroke.

Thanks for the responses guys:

Evil: I plan on upgrading to the new steering system as long as it can be done unintrusively. If need be I would go for the pulleys, but I would prefer the updated steering.

Bob: I would love to see a picture of your installation. Under no circumstances would I notch the transom. If it came to that, I would try to do something with the pulleys.
What speed do you get with the TLDI 40? Have you had good luck with it? I have looked through all the Tohatsu documentation and not seen a good picture of the steering mechanism it comes with. (Tilt tube steering?)

13 Sport: thanks for the link. I do get a good idea of the brackets needed from that. Wish the pic showed a little more detail. That is also a Merc installation so I am trying to confirm exactly what the Tohatsu comes with to see if it is similar.

Again, thanks for your comments and any other information you can provide.

What is unusual about the Tohatsu motor? Can't you just use the standard steering arm post. Here is an example:

Thanks for the great view of that setup Jim!

My concern was some of the designs I seen that have the steering shaft going through a sleeve attached through the engine mount. Thus requiring a straight side to side clear area to use the steering mechanism the way it was designed. From the pictures I can discern from the Tohatsu website, it appears the steering linkage on the Tohatsu 40 does indeed go through a sleeve in the transom plate. (They only have a picture showing this from the back)

If you download the pdf brochure on the tohatsu website they show a picture of the engine on a smokercraft from the stern, but it clearly shows the steering rod going through a sleeve located on the mounting plate with a straight horizontal side to side action.

The Johnson shown in your picture does not have the same mechanism.

Perhaps the engine could be rigged like that, but I don't believe it is intended to.

If you could take a look I would appreciate your feedback!

Thanks,
Rolfe

I found the pictures of Carl Neusel's installation of a 2002 Merc 4 stroke on Cetecea page 56. The teleflex steering does look like what I see on the Tohatsu web site. It is still hard to see on the merc if it has a location to add the mounting bracket in the middle like the older Johnson. There is a Tohatsu dealer in Marblehead who sells these so I will give them a call to see if they have any in stock I can take a look at. Also find out if there is an attachment location and extender plate for the installation shown in Jim's solution.

Thanks again
Rolfe
