Author Topic:   Vent window on side of windshield of Revenge 22 WT

On Friday, I was out on my maiden voyage with my just-acquired 1985 Revenge 22 WT. About a mile from the ramp I noticed that the starboard side vent window just aft of the windshield was gone. It was there when I left home. It must have fallen off during the 50 mile trip to the ramp. I had been over every screw on the boat (or so I thought) but neglected to check the screws on the hardware to the vent windows. A subsequent check found the screw on the port vent window loose also.
I have been unable to locate a manufacturer's name on the hardware on the port window. Anyone famuiliar with the OEM for these windows and hardware? Any help would be appreciated.
By the way the Revenge 22 WT ran just fine in the maiden voyage. She runs like a scalded dog.

Pat--The windshield on a REVENGE is probably a custom fabricated item using Taylor components. The mechanism for pushing the window open and holding it open is a stock item; you can get it a West Marine and elsewhere.
You might call Boston Whaler and see if they have a part-number for that window. Then call a dealer (like Twin Cities Marine) to see if they have one. Or you could cut one from plexiglass using the one from the other side as a pattern.
I am going to check the fasteners on mine next time I get to the boat!

If the vent window of the W/T is like the vent window on the TTA, then I would just get the glass and seal it in place. I never open mine and they leak like crazy even though I try to seal them shut. John

Another consideration, the glass on my Revenge looks like it is tinted. When ordering your new vent, you might want to check the tint so it matches the rest of the glass on the boat. I am going to check out my vent hardware also. John

I'm pretty sure you will not be able to order the glass from a dealer. Call around to glass shops in your area - you want "tempered" glass like the original. Take your port vent window with you so the glass shop can get the dimensions and match the tint. They may have to order the glass.

Thanks for all the replies and insight, I too was thinking of just having new glass installed and sealed permanantly, Sue at Twin Cities is on vacation until the 22nd. I just got back in town and plan on hitting west marine for the hardware and taking the other vent glass to Henderson Glass here in Michigan for a replacement tempered/tinted glass.
How many Revenge Owners actually make use of the vent windows? Would the consensus say they should be sealed permanantly?

I can't speak as a Revenge owner, but as a Walkaround owner we use the vents all the time. They are especially nice for venting the helm area when the full canvas is up. I think it would be a shame to seal them shut permanently.

The more I think about it, it does make sense to leave them operable, especially when staying on board and having the canvas up.

The vent windows should be left operational! When the canvas is all up and closed up with the motor running, you run a risk of CO poisoning without the positive pressure created by venting through the vent windows.

We use the vent windows on our REVENGE 22 WT all the time. They are an excellent feature and I would not consider eliminating them. I have never observed any water intrusion from the vent window.

Well, if it is not the vent window that leaks on my Revenge, then it is something darn close to the vent, and on both sides. The rain water when sitting, will run back at a diagonial from the vent area down the dash, down the front of the helm, onto the helm locker trim and stuff inside the locker can get wet. I will spray the area with a hose and see what I find.
As for positive ventilation, you must have better canvas than I do. I get lots of air in under way. Now if I had a long idle, that could be different. John

I also keep my vent windows open while underway. No problem with leakage either. I am going to check the hardware right now. Thanks for the tip.

Keep the windows as they came! I use mine all the time, helps keep fresh air coming in when going slow with the two stroke engines. Never had a water problem, but I did have a close call whil edocking , with the window open it just brushed the dick, no damage though.....Jack

I do have good news....On a tip from Jimh that they were Taylor Made, I went to West Marine today(after searching their cataog) and I picked up a set of the Taylor Made Adjustable Side Vent Arms #11616 West Marine Item #592339. $15.99 for the set of two including all hardware. They are exactly what is on my 1985 Revenge 22 WT

I think it would be well worth it for Revenge Owners to pick up an extra set to have on hand just in case. I'll be removing the Port side vent glass so I can take it to a local glass shop and have it duplicated in tempered/tinted glass to match the rest of the glass, actually, It probably would be a good idea to just take the Revenge there to have the work done......with particular attention to sealing the screws/brackets with some sort of loctite, 3M sealer, etc...

Well, I had to putt out of a couple of congested harbors last weekend and the canvas area filled up with fumes form Old Smokey. I will remove the sealant, did not work anyhow, and start using the vent windows. I have seen the errors of my ways. John

I rarely use my vent windows on my 1990 Revenge 22 W/T, then again, I rarely use full canvas. When I do, I use the vents.

John Martin mentioned he's getting water down his helm. I was too, but it was coming from the walk-thru (center) windshield. Since I've owned the boat (1997) the gasket on the bottom of the center windshield has always leaked as the gasket material on the bottom doesn't seal very well. I've make two rain flaps that I put in place while the boat is on the trailer or moored and have zero leakage now (yes, it stll leaks in the rain while underway). I've also modified my bimini & canvas windshield with 2" velco strips at the top to keep the rain fly from blowing up while underway and exposing the zippers to water intrusion.

On my 25 Revenge WT I don't close the vent windows all season. May through October, sometimes in November they'll remain closed.
I have a Mills helm cover that snaps to the windshield, goes over the seats and fastens near the floor. Those vents allow great air circulation while the boat sits in the sun. It's common to have a stiff southwest breeze nearly everyday on Cape Cod, and the boat sits dierectly facing the winid as it sits on the mooring. The canvas is continuously moving die to the air rushing into those vents.
When the flying top, and side windscreen are all in place, even when the back drop canvas is in place, those vents make all the difference. As many above have stated, the possitive pressure prevents exhaust from entering the helm area.
The vents are a great feature.

In my quest for replacement glass for my Starboard Vent window on the windshield of my 1985 Revenge 22 WT, I e-mailed Taylor Made, the original OEM supplier of the glass and adjustment arms of these vent windows. below is the reply I got and a suggestion for seeking a replacement glass.
Taylor Made was very quick to reply to my inquiry, and while they were unable to help me, they apparently have high standards in how they reply to customers seeking help.
In the mean time, this morning I took the Revenge to Henderson Glass, a local chain of Auto Glass shops. Their repair man was very good at determining how the glass hinge system worked, and was able to gently dismantle the hinge frame on the existing port window and remove it for use as a templet, we then removed the other hinge frame from the missing starboard vent window. Believe it or not there are absolutely no screws or bolts involved, it is all plastic and aluminum locking strip mechanisms. The repair man had no problem with me sticking my nose & fingers into exactly what he was doing. I didn't have my camera today, but when the glass comes in in about 5-6 days I will take photographs of how the hinge system goes together and post them here.
Here is the e-mail I received from Taylor Made, incidently I sent mine to them today at 10:12AM and by 12:30PM I had received their reply....

Taylor Made Systems is an Original Equipment Manufacturer with a seven year obsolescence period. Unfortunately, the original equipment is no longer available and we no longer have the specs for the glass piece.

If you prefer a custom replacement piece of windshield glass, you may be able to contact a local glass shop to have a tempered glass piece produced for you as a replacement. You may use the identical matching port side glass piece as a template or pattern.

You may also with to contact Ocean Dynamics. They are a Florida based company that specializes in obsolete and custom replacement windshields. The

I forgot to mention, a exact price quote will be coming this afternoon. Possibly around $200. based in part on the labor time of the repairman dismatling the hinge frame, etc.
I also requested I be given the template they produce, the glass tint color, etc, so that I can have it available for posting here on CW in case anyone else has the misfortune of loosing a vent glass...
