We used Bix Tuff-Job Remover ($19 gal, Home Depot) on our '72 - works on all kinds of paint incl epoxy - they say it is "outstanding for marine applications!"

There are many different kinds of marine paint depending on your taste & budget. The two-part paints are definately tougher. Awlgrip is especially nice (but expensive).

Good luck!
