[Seeks first-hand reports regarding the] repair, repainting, or refurbishing [of a KAINER] steering wheel. What are they covered with? How is [a KAINER steering] wheel taken off? How is [a KAINER steering wheel] refinished?

I have a 1964 SPORT 13 hull and would like to redo the [KAINER steering] wheel. Any [advice] appreciated. I am trying to keep [the 1964 Boston Whaler SPORT 13] in original shape.

Yiddil--are you talking about the the two-spoke white wheel with the chrome center? They are painted pot metal and are a pain to restore. There is a steel ring inside the wheel that rusts and expands and tends to blow off the pot metal casting. You will find that there is a ton of work involved if you want it to look new. They all seem to crack on the outside of the ring where the spokes come in. I have had success with sanding the whole wheel and making a West System batch of filler to fill the cracks. I used a Dremel to open the cracks a bit and then spread on the epoxy. Sand and prime and then spray with Awlgrip. If you go through all this work it will only last a few seasons and then you will have to do it all over again. The problem with these wheels is the rusting ring and when you lean or push on the wheel the cracks will come back. Rust never sleeps. After doing this once I would not do it again.

I would look on Ebay for the aluminum 4 spoke wheel of the same vintage. They come up on occasion and usually go for about $50. I have had one powdercoated and it is very nice. Good luck with your restoration.

Thanks for the reply. Yes looks like a pain, but at least you explained the process. Maybe a replacement is in order--not sure what kind. I had my heart set on keeping it original.

[Revived thread that has been dormant for eight years.]

[I am] in the process of rebuilding a classic 13-foot c.1967 Boston Whaler boat, hull #18987, I am looking for the old, classic, Kainer steering wheel and helm steering system. I would really like to use all-original gear. [Give me] ideas on sources. I have already restored a 1961 18-foot Penn Yan runabout. She's very pretty.

Look for vintage older components like a KAINER steering wheel at long-time, small, mom-and-pop dealerships in the upper midwest which hang on to old vintage boat parts.
