I just bought a 1999 Outrage 18. I want to re-seal the port scupper with some 3M-5200 marine adhesive sealant, but I'm not sure how to get the plastic fitting out. Can [a plastic thru-hull scupper fitting on a 1999 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 18] be taken out? I thought maybe it would screw out, but it doesn't seem to. It looks like it's threaded on the inside, but, again, I haven't been able to turn it.
Are they pressure fitted in there? Should I just seal around the fitting?
Any information would help, Thanks

The thru-hull fitting was very likely bedded with a strong adhesive sealant, possibly a Bostick product. This would account for the difficulty in removal. I would not try to bust out the old through hull fitting unless it were damaged in such a way that replacement was necessary. If that is the case, you may find that in order to remove the thru-hull fitting you will have to destroy it in the process by cutting it into pieces and chiseling it out. That is my experience in trying to remove thru-hull fittings which were installed with a high-strength sealant adhesive.
Your 1999 Boston Whaler boat hull is still under warranty, so if there is a defect in the material or construction, your dealer can provide a remedy.
If the sealant on the outboard end of the thru-hull fitting has eroded, you can easily add some more. Just use a caulk or sealant designed for underwater use.

You may want to check into the precise year and model of your boat. In the 1999 catalogue there is no OUTRAGE 18 model listed.

The 18' Outrage was introduced in 1999 for the 1999 model year even though it does not appear in the Boston Whaler catalog until 2000.This is not unusual at all.
The original classic Outrage 18 did not appear in the Whaler catalogs until 1983 even though it was for first produced in May of 1981.

Tom--I did observe that there is a 18-foot Outrage in the 2000 catalogue. Is this the same boat?

May I suggest a sealant for the scupper other than 3M 5200?
5200 is notoriously difficult to remove in the event you may wish to do so in the future. I believe Jim was hinting toward that in his response to you. Perhaps not.
Boat Life caulk is a pretty good sealant for use below the waterline. Takes a while to cure but works very well.

The scupper itself i don't believe sits below the water line. It's the self bailing scupper above the water line. I'm assuming the boat life caulk or sealant would still work fine? 5200 may not be the rigth call in case i ever have to totally remove the fitting.
any opinions?

The fittings don't screw - they ratchet like a tie-wrap. There is an inner and outer sleeve, with one "end" on each part. I am not aware of any non-destructive way to get them apart.

My only comment here is that Boat Life is a wonderful filler/sealer but is not very good for attaching things to a smooth surface. Slightest movement would break the seal on a smooth surface. A polyurethane such as 3M's 5200 sealant is much more preferred. I don't believe that Boat Life which is a polysulfide sealant is recommended for underwater repairs.

Some boat manufacturers used to seal in PVC pipes as thru-hulls with polyester resin. It worked most of the time. In a few cases the boat sank at the dock after the boat flexed during use breaking the seal. Your saving grace is that your boat will not sink. How much water gets introduced into the foam is another matter
Know your sealants before you make repairs.

3M 4200 or 3M 4200 FC (Fast Cure) will do the job quite nicely. These polyurethane sealants are designed to be easier to remove for applications exactly like this one.
Sika 231 polyurethane caulk is also a good choice being less of an adhesive than 240 or 241.

Yes, the 18' Outrage model was made in 1999. This was confirmed recently when I visited with CW participants Thane Osborne and John Lay in Falmouth, England. Thane's 18' Outrage is a 1999 model.
