I finally was able to take a maiden voyage on my 1984 recently purchased Montauk after spending the last two months trying to get the bare minimun done. YEA! The Evinrude 1988 88 HP motor ran great for the first hour and then a stream of steam starting coming out of the top of the engine. Appears to be a hole in the head on top right under the electronic ignition module. About 1/2" in diameter. Is this something that can be welded or expoyied with JB Weld or am I just wasting my time? Is it time to start shopping for an new engine? Appreciate any comments. Thanks, Ken

The engine is down now so pull off the head and see what it looks like, I would pull both sides. If the heads are that bad, by the time you spend the money on the machine shop and work you can buy new heads. also once you spend money for the work its still an old head that may break some where else. best to get new heads. Once you pull the engine down this will give you a better idea for repair. Depending on how it looks I would replace the heads and run it until it dies. The motor is an 1988 and not worth much...good luck |
