I have a 3/4 inch chip in my gelcoat on my 2005 170 Montauk. It is where the side of the boat meets the bottom of the hull. I can see the fiberglass under the gelcoat. The gelcoat looks like it is about 1/8 inch thick in this location. Will tgat small chip allow the boat to absorb water. The boat is kept on a trailer.

I wouldn't worry about water leaking through the acual fiberglass. Unless it's damaged, it's a lot thicker then the gelcoat and waterproof.

I have completed several touchups using the product ordered from this site www.spectrumcolor.com

I'd still use a gelcoat repair product to fill in the chipped area even if it's temporary. Whenever I get a chip, I try to fill it even temporarily to do whatever I can to keep water from getting between the gelcoat and the fiberglass. Water may not cause the problem I've described, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Especially when it's such an easy repair.
