I am getting ready to install a new water pump kit on my 2005 Mercury 90 hp 2 stroke Saltwater version motor.

I have reviewed the service manual. This is what it says:

1. Remove spark plug leads
2. Shift engine into forward
3. Tilt engine to full up position
4. Remove 4 fasteners
5. Remove locknut and washer.
6. Remove gear housing.

The manual does not even mention the shift shaft. I know from doing water pump kits on other motors that the shift shaft linkage connection is an issue. The logical conclusion from the service manual is that the shift shaft does not have to be disconnected.

If anyone familiar with this motor has removed the gear housing, I would appreciate hearing about how the shift shaft is connected and disconnected (if necessary) when removing the gear housing. Thanks.

The shift shaft will remain with mid housing as you pull the lower down, it is splined. There is sometimes a spacer on the shift shaft part that remains in the lower, don't loose it. That is an easy job on a Mercury.
