Our pet 1986 Montauk is starting to show wear to non-skid near the stern, where we do most of our fishing activity. Can we compound a non-skid surface to fill in the small fissures without waxing? It seems to make sense, but I've never heard about it. Thanks for help.

Compounding doesn't fill anything in. It is an abrasive. Think of it as sandpaper without the paper, but with the abrasive in a liquid. Sort of the same concept as the exfoliating cream my wife uses.

If the gelcoat is dull and oxidized, yes compounding will bring back the shine. But it won't fix things like dings, divots or cracks.

Try Starbright deck or non-skid cleaners and a stiff brush. I use a battery operated scum buster that works great.
