Post 2003 or 2004 they stopped making the RPS with removeable starboard on the top of the RPS on the Montauk 170. Because of this there was some interest in seeing an access hatch installed on the top of the RPS of a Montauk 170. The biggest question was how the RPS cushion would fit on the top of an access hatch (raising the seat height by 5/8th of an inch in my casee). Here is my step by step install of a Jim Black 13X30 inch access hatch (Jim Black's web site calls it a "door") on my 2006 Montauk 170. http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i316/srcbell/2008%20Season%20Prep/ RPS%20Hatch%20Install/?albumview=grid -Seth

Thank you. I'm looking for a shallow tray to fit the hatch. As many people have pointed out, it would be a great storage area for tackle, tools, maps, etc. If anyone knows where I can find one please e-mail me or post here. I didn't see on Jim Black and Associate's web page that they manufacture one. -Seth

Seth, It looks like you're no stranger to using tools, soooo fabricate one from 1/2" Starboard. Great stuff and very easy to use. Cuts smoothly, routes nicely, and uses mechanical fasteners for assembly.(it taps real well)By building it yourself not only will you have the pride factor but you can design the compartments or dividers anyway you like. Another CW'er built one some time ago and it was way, way kewl! good luck. |

How big of a job? I could give you a good idea by outlining the job in a photo diary with a step by step. Would that help? Oh wait. I already did that.

All kidding aside it's easy. The steps in a nutshell are: 1) Buy Hatch 2) Cut Hole in RPS to fit hatch 3) Caulk and screw hatch into place in hole made in step 2. Done! |

Seth, What are you up to? No good, I hope! Tell all that if they like the hatch set-up that you did, I've got them. Good to hear from you! |
