Guys I need some help. I have a 2005 Mercury 90 hp 4stroke on a 24ft Pontoon. Today I had an issue where my boat would only go forward. When i put it in reverse, the boat would just idle. I need help!!! Anyone know what I can do, or a diagram to help?!?!?!?!?

Shaun,
I'm going to ask sosmerc to chime in here, but it is possible the slide mechanism where your shift cable attaches broke. I'd hate to think it was something in the gearcase. Sosmerc?

Step one is to disconnect the shift cable from the engine.
Make sure the gearcase is in neutral, start the engine, and then see if it will shift into reverse manually.
If not...you have a problem in the gearcase. But most likely, the shift cable needs adjustment. In neutral...the shift cable should be adjusted so that it "preloads" a bit towards reverse, but still gives a clean neutral when in neutral.
With age, throttle and shift cables do stretch and thus there sometimes is a need to re-adjust the cables, or replace them.
