I learn an interesting point about this Whaler. The previous owner complained about the #2 battery going dead all the time and couldn't figure it out. Every time we test the circuit with the volt-meter, there was never a drain. While docked at the marina I decided to cut the wire to the bilge pump float switch because I was concerned the float would hang up in the make position and drain the battery.
My son caught some bait fish and we thought the best way to keep them would be to pull the plug on the fish box and leave the bait to swim around for the night. I return the next morning to find about an inch of water on the cabin floor. Knowing the cabin was the lowest point I quickly pull one of the deck inspection plates and found about eight inches of water in the bilge. I plugged the fish box and ran the bilge pump.
Glad it was a Whaler!
It wasn't until I got home last night and started washing it down that I discovered that there is a piece of Starboard making up the rear wall of the box that is loose and open to the bilge. That would cause the problem! It also explains the dead battery problem with the previous owner as he like to keep the plug out of the fish box at the dock.
Now, if I could only get my hands on a colonoscopy camera to see if that plate is held in with screws.
