What [is a typical charge for a dealer to] to replace a trim motor? Recently I had two replaced on twin Yamaha 90-HP motors, and the marina is charging $880 for labor alone. I think this seems outrageously high, and I was looking to see some other prices before I visit them on Friday. Any input would be appreciated. Also, they already had the boat out of water for some minor maintenance they were completing. Thanks, Andrew

I assume they had problems with frozen bolts? |

When I talked to a mech about replacing mine (1987 Yamaha 90) several years ago, he warned me it was not the cost of the motor (~$200), but the labor and condition of the bracket/bolts.Busting out bolts, retapping etc., is time consuming. At $80-115/hr, depending where you live, that is ~4 hours a motor. If heavily corroded by salt water use, it does not sound terrrible. If the bracket and bolts are in decent shape, you got taken for a ride.

You have to remove the engine or hang it off the transom to do this. It should be by the hour and if all comes apart easily, $880 would be about double the labor. I would say about 1.5-2.5 hours per engine. |
