My water pressure gauge shows 25 lbs. at rest and moves up past the numbers when under power. Is there a way to calibrate the gauge to 0 at rest? My motor is a 1989 Black Max 150.

For what a new gauge costs, replace it. You can not calibrate the gauge. The only other problem may be the sender: If the gauge reads 25 psi with the ignition off, it is the gauge. If it reads 25 psi with the ignition on and engine not running, it could be the sender. Quick check: Disconnect the gauge wire from the sender. If the gauge goes to 0 PSI then the sender is probably the issue. Good luck!

My water pressure gauge is of the direct type, that is, water pressure acts on the column of air in the capillary hose to open a curled copper tube mechanism that looks somewhat like those new years eve noisemakers that unroll when you blow into them. This unrolling action is attached by a little tiny gear mechanism to the dial arrow.

My gauge got waterlogged and like yours wouldn't return to zero when it should have. I took it apart and applied a vacuum to the tube mechanism, got the water out and got it back to zero. I don't think it's calibrated even though it registers pressure again. I think water in it during the -25 F winter didn't do it any good. They're supposed to just have air in them, not water.

For $45. I lost interest.
