Last year I bought a 1971 Boston Whaler 13-foot boat with a 30-HP Mariner that the seller thought was a 1994 model. The serial number tag says 30M / 680 S 2064 01. It says made in Japan and has a Yamaha symbol stamped on it. How can I find out what year motor this is? If it is a Japanese Mariner, how to find parts for it?

Mercury Marine has sold hundreds of thousands of outboard motors with the Mercury or Mariner brand name which were manufactured in whole or part by other companies located in Japan. However, your local Mercury dealer can provide parts for them.
Since your motor indicates it was made in Japan and contains indicators that it was made by Yamaha, it is very likely a motor that was made in Japan and was made by Yamaha. Yamaha has manufactured in Japan and supplied to Mercury hundreds of thousand of outboard motors, which Mercury has resold in North America under the Mercury or Mariner brand names. Your motor is very likely one of them.
Your Mercury dealer should be able to help you identify the year of manufacture of the motor. He will likely have a cross reference to serial number or model number. It may be that other readers have access to this information and can contribute, too.
